hey guys!
i had some quick questions about a couple of classes I want to take for Winter Quarter.
Now at this point, i don't care about the teacher, i just want some advice on classes I should take.
A bit background: My plan is to graduate junior year [either that or get into the UCSD Skaggs Pharm. 7 year program.] so i want to load up on units :)
[major = pharmacological chem]

definite course [must take]
Chem 6B
Math 20D
MMW 12

optional courses [i am thinking about:]
Intro/Acad Ment/Elem Schl Stdn [4units] + Practicum in Teaching/Learning (2 units)
^it's a co requisite, also it fulfills ERC regional specialization req, and you spend 4hrs iwth elem. kids...]
Econ 1
BILD 1
Chem 7L

i am thinking about taking Chem 7L with Chem 6C, so i have Chem 6A/B basics down.
other then that, im utterly confused over which course i want to take.
also, how many units can we sign up for?

What’s your class standing right now? Chem 7L is tough to get into.

Most people go from 20C to F, then D to E (or was it E then D, I forget. You should check it out yourself). 20F is much easier than 20D. I believe Pharm schools accept 20F as one of the required math courses.

Bild 1 is pretty easy, but be careful not to slack off completely. A lot of basic chemistry is reviewed at the beginning of the quarter.

im not sure what you mean by “class standing” but my course registration time is about 40 minutes after the Freshmen Course Signups are opened.
my current classes are:
TDGE 25: public speaking
Chem 6A
MMW 11
Math 20C

lol im still clueless…
i guess i can try to get into Chem 7L and maybe ill skip Econ this quarter?
so it would be the required courses, and then Chem 7L, the EDS, BILD1

i just looked at Halpain on RMP, and she has horrid reviews… maybe ill take econ and do BILD next quarter?

Most people take Chem lab in their 2nd year here. I had 36 units coming into UCSD as a freshman last year and couldn’t get chem lab until this quarter. Second years have 1 year of units advantage over you in getting CHEM 7L courses. I wouldn’t count on getting CHEM 7L if I were you, but you’re welcome to try anyways. Make sure you have a backup schedule.

I had Halpain for BILD 1 last year in the fall. I didn’t give her a bad review mostly because I did well in the class and because it was my first quarter and had no idea what a good of bad professor was. I would probably give her a poor rating if I were given another chance to rate her again.

Much of the material on the test came from the book and was not in her lectures. Also, there were a ton of questions (about 10 pages of multiple choice, true false, fill in the blank kinds), so you had to move fast to finish the test. You need to know the material really well.

Approximately 50% of students had D’s and F’s after the first midterm, so she let us drop 1 midterm. She also raised all of our grades by 2% after the final. I guess she tries to be fair, even though she isn’t really.

thanks Radishrp
lol i guess i’ll aim for getting the lab right now, and if not, bad luck for me [luckily if there isn’t any waitlists :P]…
but i i’ll take all your advice and ill go see one of those advice counselors people
thank you for your help!! i really really appreciate it!!

yeah i noticed. the labs are like 2-3 hours and there is a lecture!!! … but i do have MMW 12- writing intensive so maybe ill over look Chem 7L right now

Chem7l was my first experience with horrid waitlists - it’s common to see waitlist 15+ on a 20 person lab class in chem7l. And not only is it 3 hours lab and 1 lecture (7 hours a week), you also have to factor in all the lab report stuff you do outside of class. I really wouldn’t take it with any other intensive writing or lab courses.

I find that counselors tend to recommend freshmen to take it easy their first year. Just a heads up to take their advice with a grain of salt when they tell you to not take labs and hard schedules :P

i might not take BILD; but in case i don’t, any “backups” people would recommend?
Also:
the problem is this: the MMW class is writing intensive, so i expect to write a lot of essays. Should i take it easy for the next two quarters [as MMW 12 and MMW 13 are writing intensive]?? the classes do seem easy IMO, and i really doubt bio or econ will be a huge deal for me. But i honestly am confused.

i was initially thinking about taking this Education Studies Course [for GE req] which basically means that i would take 4 hours from my week and i would go to elementary schools and help out and all that. If I do that, then i would probably be dropping Bio or Econ [most likely bio] but i just dont know where to turn. what do u think?
thanks

actually i just decided. i asked a good friend of mine his opinion and he told me to stick with 4 classes, so i am taking everything but Econ off the list
