Hey everyone, I’m headed to The University of Michigan in the fall and I’m concerned that I’m gonna do very badly in school. I’m a little worried that the workload is gonna be insane compared to some other state schools just because of Michigan’s prestige. I’m planning on becoming an Econ major so I’m curious about the nature of the classes Econ 101 and Math 115 (Calc 1). I already took Calc 1 in highschool but I’m worried it might be a super hard “Michigan math class”. Does anyone have any insight on what classes I should take as a freshman?
Congratulations. They must of thought you can handle it or they would not accept you right? Gotta have a better attitude.
Michigan is in no doubt a very tough school and they are known world wide for their math curriculum. Any class can be hard. There are learning centers, professor hours, math labs for help, study groups etc etc. Don’t be shy do them. It’s also a great way to meet people.
At orientation you will sit down with your advisor and figure out what your plan going forward should look like. Maybe review some math concepts this summer with Kahn Academy or the like so you feel prepared.
Did you take the calc AP test? The honors calc classes go into a lot more depth than the typical HS class. The regular series is just a bit more. I’d discuss that with your advisor. Econ 101 is not all that difficult, Econ 401 is the tougher class. There are a lot of LSA requirements with are good to take early, such as languages.
Look at the instructor evaluation and pick out the highly rated ones for any class you might be interested in. If you choose a very early orientation date, you have a much better chance of getting a good professor and schedule.
Hi, I’m in Ross so I had to take Econ 101 and Math 115 freshman year. They’re manageable, but my words of advice: look at the “ART” profiles of Econ teachers teaching 101 on the LSA Course Guide to find the best teachers, and DO NOT take Econ and Math 115 at the same time. That’s the advice I got and I’d agree with it~ Congrats!
