I am currently majoring in HR management but I have recently considered looking into Geography. Not sure if I would double major in it, switch my major to it, or just minor in it. Not even sure what field of Geography I would go into or what the job field is even like for it. All I know is I have an interest in nature and I am currently taking an intro Physical Geography class in which I find pretty interesting. However, I don’t want to completely give up on HR management because it pays more and I may like it just as well. I don’t know what to do.
What type of job could I get in Geography and would it even be worth giving up HR management for it? I wouldn’t mind making a commute in to either Baltimore, Harrisburg, or Richmond in the future.
It’s actually funny because I was an HR management major for a bit before I made the switch to geography. I wonder if they are correlated in terms of personalities/ interests lol. But anyways, like you I had a strong interest in nature and the environment, ultimately I decided to pursue it because of all the talk about climate change which may lead to some very interesting jobs in the future. The thing with HR I’ve heard is you don’t really need the degree to get the job in that field. You could major in geography and then get a master’s in HR if you thought the market was dry. Or you could do the double major if it’s possible. I am double majoring in Geography and Information Technology. These two are pretty related though. However, I can imagine geography can teach you things about culture that would be related to HR. Really just follow your passion and you will be alot happier. If you can do the double major I say do it, but don’t weigh in on your undergrad degree too much, well at least that is what i’ve been told.
Take another class or two in geography. Introductory classes are meant to stoke your interest in majors; that’s partially how they are designed. Take another class that’s designed for majors - maybe a GIS class, or a methods class, or something else that’s a little deeper into the major - and continue to explore this interest.
HR management probably does have better employment prospects, but as someone else mentioned, you don’t have to major in HR to go into HR (and I suspect most HR people don’t have HR degrees, since it’s not a very common major). You could major in geography and go into HR later, if you wanted to. Also consider the possibility of keeping your HR major but minor in geography.
