Seems like columbia has finally ended the absurd distinction between first year points and dining dollars...so now the "points" you get freshman year will roll over from year to year until you graduate! Even more reason to opt for meal plan 4.

Don’t most people already use the points by the time freshman yr. is over? Not trying to be argumentative, just trying to point out that what the administration should really do is abolish the silliness of the mandatory meal-plan altogether. Wilma’s nice but those omelets are weak!

it really depends on your eating habits but there tend to be a lot of people who have points left over by the end of the year and have to use them or loose them

there is no way in hell they’ll abolish the mandatory meal plan…if they do so there’ll be no more on-campus food venues. they basically make the vast majority of their money off of freshman meal plans

my friend has about 800 points. talk about self-discipline and all that john jay food.

that’s a fair point, but so long as we have blue javas i’m cool with there being no on-campus eateries.

the blue javas are both part of dining services

…when i worked there i think every location except john jay, uris, ferris booth and (maybe) JJ’s was loosing money…so they have to make up for the failure of those location with the success of others

blasphemy! her omelette-fu is strong.

The problem is that not enough people are bringing backpacks full of tupperware containers into John Jay. If you’re going to pay $13 per meal, get your money’s worth.

Speaking personally, I bring my laptop and a few good magazines into an all-you-can-eat buffet at Arby’s and stay for the whole day. You can’t be too financially conservative these days!

ok, more seriously, i was among several people I knew who had ~100 points left over at the end of freshman year, and went on a massive spending spree at JJ’s Place to pick up lots of extra cereal, drinks, snacks, and chicken fingers. It was a madhouse down there, and a lot of people were just buying stuff and donating it to charity on the spot. While that’s a nice impulse, the bureaucracy that created it was definitely a little ■■■■■■■■.

Yeah I have 80 points left and I’m trying my hardest not to spend them. I just wish I had known this earlier and tried harder because really, you can survive on one meal a day (buy cereal, get lunch from barnard, use their take out trays to bring dinner back to your room) I did that for a while but then just got lazy. I wish I had tried harder though because I’m not gonna have a dining plan next year and lots of dining dollars would sure be convenient.

…y don’t u just get more dining dollars. it used to be that if you bought them at the end of the year you get 10% additional dining dollars free…you should see if they’re still doing that. i got 1000 dining dollars at the end of freshman year and they lasted me though the next three years (though i did have a dining employee perk so ymmv)
