Freshman dorms

Can you tell me the names of the best (most Popular) dorms on the east side and the west side and the reputation of those dorms?

Depending on gender: Cloudman is nice for girls (my sister is there)
Field is the only other dorm I’ve seen for guys . . . they’re all small :stuck_out_tongue:
These are both east. IDK about west??

I’ve been obsessing about Tech so much that I’ve actually used Google SketchUp to model the dorm layout. Here are the pics:

Thanks, Jacketboy for the dorm layouts. That is impressive.
I understand where you are coming from - I have been obsessing about Tech too, considering that admissions decisions come out today.
Can anyone else comment on the most popular dorms for boys on east and west side? If I am accepted, I guess I will need to put up a dorm deposit and select a dorm??

Field is currently the honors dorm, so unless you’ve been offered acceptance to the honors program, you won’t be able to live there. Glenn and Towers are two of the biggest dorms on east campus, both male only. You want to avoid these two. They are generally considered to be the least desirable. MPH (Matheson, Perry, and Hanson) are pretty new and probably the nicest I’ve been in on east. They are also co-ed. Hopkins (co-ed) is good too, as is Howell (male.)

On west, all the dorms are relatively new, but Freeman and Montag are being renovated this year and will presumably be the nicest on west for this coming fall.

The east vs. west debate is always a big question for incoming freshman, and even returning students for that matter. Historically, most students have tended to prefer the dining hall, Woodruff, on west campus. However, the institute will be opening a new dining hall on east campus this coming fall on North Avenue, so the dining hall argument is no longer really valid. The other major factor is proximity to the CRC (campus recreation center.) If you are an athlete, you will probably want to chose west. Finally, if you are considering pledging a fraternity, you will probably want to chose east campus due to its proximity to the greek houses.

Glad i could help! Thanks RmblinReck! Very useful :D

RmblinReck, thank you. Excellent feedback! Can you elaborate a little more about the dorms? For example, do the Greeks typically choose certain dorms, and the band students another dorm, etc. Personally, I don’t care if I am on the east or west side and don’t care about the distance from class/frat houses, I am just looking for a dorm in very good condition and am interested in joining a fraternity. Thanks

Okay, well if you are going to pledge a fraternity, then the dining hall won’t really be much of a concern because you will almost certainly be required to use your fraternity’s meal plan. I would still say East Campus is where you want to be. I know you don’t care about the distance to class or your frat, but on a rainy day, or at 3am, you most certainly will. Also, there’s way more activity on east campus, which can be either nice or a pain, depending on how you look at it. And no, there aren’t really dorms that certain groups of students tend to prefer. Honestly, housing as a freshman is pretty much luck of the draw… during my freshman year, many of my friends got placed in dorms that weren’t even on their top five list on their housing application.

Well, how does the housing assignment process work? I just assumed it worked like many other colleges in that the housing was assigned to applicants according to the order that they paid their deposit or were accepted?

best dorm for a girl studying chem?

Fraternities tend to not make pledges sign up for meal plans. Some do, and it’s a really bad idea. The last thing you want is a kid who wants to depledge but doesn’t because he paid for the full semester meal plan. Besides, most freshman come in with a meal plan, so it’s a waste.

Is it that difficult to live on west campus and join a sorority?? I like how the east campus is closer to the CRC and has less distractions (socially), but I’ll probably join a sorority so I don’t want living on west to be a problem…?

It’s really not that big of a deal. You’ll just make the cross campus walk every day. But it’s no worse than making the East-to-CRC walk everyday.
