Freshman Dorms

My son will be picking his housing tomorrow at 4:00. He would like a social dorm but doesn't necessarily want to be surrounded by the party crowd. He applied to Honors so he could get Hume but did not get in. We keep hearing Broward is very popular with Freshman but that it's also "the party dorm". He wants to make friends and socialize but he's not interested in the fraternity or party scene. Has anyone had any experience with this? I guess I'm just trying to picture the atmosphere and I'm wondering if it's as bad as I'm thinking? Lol. Insights and suggestions please! :)

What's a nice social dorm for Freshman without the craziness?

I live in Hume and love it but picked two alternate dorms in case I did not get in Hume last year…and after what I have seen both those dorms are social but not continuos party scenes.
Beuty Towers. Lot of Freshmen. 2 double rooms. 4 students share kitchen and bathroom.
Trusler hall. Accross the street from Hume. Many honors kids live there. They have leader/scholar program however you are not required to participate.

@telcom543 - Thank you for responding! What do you think about Broward and Jennings? About the atmosphere there? We’ll look into Trusler. Regarding Beaty…I know he wants to be close to everything (food, classes, etc.) do you think it’s a bit out of the way? Thanks :)

My S absolutely loved Broward Hall his freshman year! It is a social dorm but my shy S said that it was the best year of his life. He really matured and got to know most of the kids on his floor. The bathroom is down the hall so he naturally met others in the hall and even while brushing his teeth. He also propped his door open at times and different guys stopped by to say hi and my son would ask them to let him know if they wanted to go get some dinner later. He easily met some friends. Jennings is also a good social dorm, but a bit quieter—and only 2 or 3 guys floors, the rest of the floors are girls. It is across the street from Broward, so about 5-10 minutes longer to walk to class, dining halls, etc. Beaty Towers is next to Broward and also a 5-10 minute longer walk to everything. Some like the small kitchens in Beaty, but each 4 person room is pretty small (bathroom in the room)…Many prefer Jennings and Broward…Those two also have ice cold air conditioning  Broward recently was painted, with new flooring and windows. If your son chooses Broward and his floor is too social, he can just walk a short 5 minute walk to a libary to study, study in the lounge on the floor or on the first floor, or get a pair of noise cancelling head phones or ear buds. My S is now living in an apartment his sophmore year with 2 friends that he met in Broward…all good friends. Good luck!

@jankrav - Thank you so much for your post! I hope you don’t mind but you seem to very knowledgeable about the dorm so I have a few more questions. So having never been there…does the building have an elevator? And does the a/c window unit also do heat? I know it gets quite cold there in Gainesville at times. OK, and this is probably a bit odd but a few people have said that Broward is not clean. What does that mean?! Don’t they clean it every week? And haven’t they recently remodeled the place? Thank you for your help! :)

FLnative28—Beaty Towers has an elevator because it is so many floors…Broward has only 4 floors, Jennings–4 floors—no elevators. There is a freight elevator that they may allow you to use when moving in, but they only let you bring one load up(gather stuff together near elevator and have a sibling sit with stuff until you get all the stuff together). The a/c window unit works great and there is also heating in every room, I believe along the baseboard. The dorm controls the heating…the students control their own a/c. It is always very comfortable…in cold weather, there is always good heating. Broward bathrooms are cleaned every day. However, the guys dorms can get messy within that one day. They have recently remodeled Broward and I think it is very nice. You can email me with any questions at any time…I have a S and a D who have gone to UF…jankrav@aol.com.
