Is there a "best" freshman dorm? What is the difference between the freshmen dorms? Also, do they have different "personalities" (i.e. one is more artsy, etc). I ask because I heard that if students are accepted ED they get some choice in dorm assignments (wishful thinking about being accepted ED of course).

first of all, ED used to be the ONLY ones that get a choice in which dorms they get, but now everyone gets to list the 6 dorms in order of preference [rubin, hayden, brittany, Uhall, third north, & weinstein] but ED gets most likely their first or second choice whereas RD gets whatever's left over...goddard is reserved for explorations, at least this year, and isn't even an option in the list of preference...

my list was the order above, and i got third north, my fifth choice, but i love it here...i thought the distance from campus would be bad, but it's great because we have more food places, movies, stores, etc. here than those who live by washington square park. my five-person apartment is pretty spacious, and i couldn't imagine living in my friends' tiny doubles in the traditional dorms with only that space and a tiny bathroom. [we also have 2 bathrooms, 2 sinks, 2 showers, and 2 medicine cabinets]

so, in my opinion, Uhall is the "best" because it's a nicer apartment style than third north [they are the only 2 apartment styles for freshmen], but i'm happy in third north :D

rubin, hayden, weinstein, goddard, and brittany are traditional style, and rubin & brittany don't have air conditioning, and that's about it...oh yeah, and weinstein has veryyyy terribly small dorms, but an awesome dining hall...

as for "personalities", the traditionals are slightly more social for obvious reasons, people don't wanna sit on top of each other and generally move into the hallways and others' rooms to hang out and leave their doors open more, whereas in an apartment, we can hang out in the living room/kitchen or our rooms, so there's no need to hang out in the hallways, and in third north we can't leave our doors open because it's a "fire hazard" [the doors are metal and if there is a fire, they will block it out of our room :\ ]

good luck!

Thanks for your re3sponse. By the way, what is "explorations"? On the tour Goddard was the only dorm we were shown, which doesn't seem right if it isn't even available!

http://www.nyu.edu/residential.education/community/explorations_community.html
explorations is themed housing, you all share an interest in one topic, check it out

explorations is themed housing where with an RA, your floor, and a live-in "expert" [assumingly a professor] "explore" whatever you sign up for...photography, film making, communities in NYC [little italy, chinatown, etc...]

it is not only in goddard, but all of goddard is reserved for it...in third north, they have 2 explorations floors and a choices floor in the east tower...the explorations floors have a much larger common space for the whole floor rather than a smaller one for the suite as all the other apartments have

and don't fret about only seeing goddard, because most of the traditionals that i've seen look more or less like the rooms in goddard, although some may be bigger or smaller, it all depends which room you have [corner rooms are bigger, during my orientation i had a 5 person corner room in brittany and the closets were massive, but so was the actual room]...with the obvious exception that weinstein has cinderblock walls :D

if you wanna see other dorms, try going to another tour, talking to the housing department, or even trying to find freshmen that are willing to sign you in and take you up to see their apartment, one of my friends did that over the summer once she found out she was in third north and had never been inside of it...sadly, nyu is one of those colleges that likes to surprise you on move-in day with what your room looks like :]

i say go for a traditional dorm freshman year because it seems that all the other years are suites/apartment style. which is nice but i live in weinstein and it is THE BEST. the rooms aren't actually that small; i have a bigger one cuz im in the corner. but still, they aren't cramped and everything is so convenient, food, wsp, classes, air conditioning. but most importantly, it actually IS very social. in weinstein, each floor is cut in half so there are only about 30 kids on this floor and everyone is ultra friendly.

i also would have liked hayden but i am much happier than i thought i would be.

It seems that most people are extremely satified with their dorm assignments, no matter what dorm, or how it differed from their original choice. Last spring their were posts from every frosh dorm, claiming that the one they lived in the best.

In response to the second post, all students do get to list their order of preference now but ED do still get priority.
That's why you got your fifth choice. I got my first.

go with weistein or hayden for proximity to classes

im in brittany and i love it. brittany is known for having the biggest rooms. we dont have AC but we pay $2000 less because we dont have AC which i think its worth it since you only use AC for the first month. brittany is one of the dorms that has carpet which is something that was really important to me... the linoleum floors in weinstein just felt so cold when i stayed there for orientation. but yes weinstein is by far the most social dorm.

Hayden is the best, and theres always a 30 person line of people trying to sign in.

Granted, hayden is probably the best because ED'ers mostly snatched it, so we were the most excited about it, and alot of us had been talking to each other through facebook and such since spring.

weinstein has best dining hall, and brittany supposely has bigger rooms...but i have 3 walk in closets in a double, and alot in brittany dont.

definately hayden first choice, weinstein second choice (rooms are prisons tho)

dont be mislead and do apartment style, though a few like it, ive noticed the largest discontest coming from there. Whereas everyone has there doors open and everyone on the floor is friends in hayden, in apartment style people are generally (but not always) secluded. And since u have kitchens you have less opportunity to meet people in dining halls. And lastly , its just a long friggen walk.

It is completely a personal decision. I am in 3rd North and it is TOTALLY social- not secluded at all- the walk is wonderful, and we're really close to Union Square which is great, too- we only have a 10 minute walk to campus which is nothing. I've had NO problem meeting people. If you want a kitchen, go for apartment style- you'll love it. If you want traditional, go for it- you'll love it. No one can tell you what you will/will not like.

I am in Rubin and I love it. 1 reason why I love it even more now! Matt Damon, Robert DeNiro, and Angelina Jolie (and Michael Gambon, alec baldwin, etc) are filming a movie one block down 5th avenue from us!!! A lot of Rubinites camped out, and a lot of us got pictures w/ them / got their autographs. 5th avenue is the place to be, and don't let the "distance" from classrooms fool you. You get used to walking in a week, so even walking to tisch hall from rubin is not far at allllll. We DO have a/c in the 2nd floor lounge, laundry room, and dining hall, so it's not like we melt. umm... another cool thing: all the celebrities I've seen so far have been on 5th avenue-- mike myers, matt damon, betsey johnson, etc. The rooms are spacious and the view is AMAZING. From my room, I can look out to the right and see the empire state building. If I look to the left, I can see the washington square park monument =) Of course, this means you have to be one of the lucky ones to get a view of 5th ave, but stillll. Rubin kids are also really cool b/c we don't have all ED kids or have all explorations kids, etc. we're diverse =P hahaha.

I stayed at Weinstein this summer. The dining hall is good but the rooms are very old and aren't in the best condition.

Im applying early decision and I wanted to put Hayden as my first choice (later on of course if i get accepted...) but my dad said he wouldn't let me, because he read an article that said that two girls recently got raped at Hayden!!

Is this true? That really scares me, and my dad is becoming all overprotective because of this story.

akhila, where did he read that? Source? I'm a student at NYU and I haven't heard about anything like that happening and trust me, news travels fast here. I have to say, though, that even if it WERE true, does your father honestly think that you'd be more at risk in one dorm rather than another? Seriously. Rape happens, murder happens, suicides happen. That doesn't mean that because you're living in a particular dorm you are more likely to have them happen to YOU than if you lived somewhere else on campus. That makes no sense to me, at all.

you should smack your dad

um... I think two girls got molested at 3rd north recently...

also remember 90% of molested in college means "got really drunk and i slept with ugly kid"

I didn't hear anything about third north, and LOL mattistotle is right, its like a Saturday morning debutant.
