Freshman Dorms

I recently toured GW for the second time and I'm possibly applying ED to the ESIA. I've heard different perspectives on the freshman dorms but everyone always says that Thurston Hall is the party dorm. I definitely want to party but I definitely want some space in terms of being able to sleep and study haha. Would it be advisable to try and get a 2 person room at Thurston, go to Madison and party at Thurston, or live on Mount Vernon and be part of that community? Thanks.

Live in Madison, or somewhere else. Thurston is quite loud.

Mount Vernon? It’s far away, and you feel like you’re a commuter student back and forth to your classes. Nice, small atmosphere… but most classes are on Foggy Bottom and the commute gets old fast.

So would Thurston be the only dorm on the Foggy Bottom campus for dorm parties, or do all dorms have parties just to a lesser extent?

There is some of it everywhere, but Thurston is known for it. You mix in hundreds of freshman, who are now living on their own for the first time, and you get Thurston- noisy, dirty, etc. Madison is relatively quiet.

And, it’s not so much that there are that many dorm parties… most people go out. Clubs, bars, whatever. The noise in dorms is often people coming back from the clubs, bars, etc. and continuing a party (or drunkenness) in the dorms.

My son is a current freshman, living in Thurston. He said the noise isn’t too bad, yet. Hasn’t had any trouble sleeping; does some studying in the library, though. He is in a 6 person room, which we weren’t sure about, but he’s really enjoyed. He likes all 5 of his roommates, and it’s helped him to get to know a greater amount of people in a short period of time!

My son is also a freshman living in Thurston in a 6-person room. He and his roommates all agreed to respect others who might be sleeping at any time, so the rule they established is to assume you need to be quiet until you see who’s doing what. My son has a white noise machine and ear plugs. So with all of these things, he’s doing fine. He also says he’s happy with all his roommates.

I live in Thurston right now. I don’t party that much, and still am happy here. It’s loud on the weekends, of course. But during the weeknights…it’s fine. I get all of the sleep I want. There’s always the library for studying, too. I definitely recommend Thurston for incoming freshman, It’s a lot of fun.

Thurston is fun. Don’t pass it up.

Thurston is fun but you will not be left out of the social scene if you live somewhere else. You will make friends that live in the Thurston anyways. But I have never actually gone to Thurston specifically to party. It’s a lot more fun to get together with a group of friends and go out or once you get involved in some school orgs you’ll meet some people who are older than you that have apartment style housing and their parties are much better.
