Does anyone have an idea of what the freshman engineering retention rate is at UM? What percentage of engineering students don't make it to the beginning of their sophomore year? Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Update: I just received the following email from undergraduate admissions at UMD. Hopefully it will be of help to others.

The 2008-2009 freshman retention rate was 87.7%.
The 4-year graduation rate is 42%, 5-year is 58%, and 6-year is 62%.

This only captures students who begin in engineering and graduate from engineering, and does not reflect students who start in other majors and switch in to engineering, or switch from engineering and graduate from other majors on campus. As an example, in fall 2008, 613 students enrolled in engineering 62 changed majors. We saw an additional 126 students transfer into the college, so the graduation rate will not capture any of those students. It is far better to consider the number of entering students each year (we average about 700) and those graduating (about 125 graduate each winter, and another 550-600 graduate each spring). Also consider that a number of our students pursue co-ops, research, and 5 year BS/MS programs that can modify statistical numbers and the calendar date of graduation.
