My son, a freshman, recieved his schedule today. They only gave him three 4 credit classes, elon 101 (1 credit) and Wellness (2 credits). I don't want him to fall behind from the get go but I also think that having a light load to start off with might be nice. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks.

This is normal for a first year freshman at Elon. My daughter also has the same course load. Just so you (and your son) are aware, the wellness class is only half a semester (could be first or second).

I don’t want to cause undue concern, especially because I know that Elon evens things out for freshmen after required classes have been taken by year’s end, but my son’s fall semester schedule last year gave him 19 credits.

With wellness being a half-semester course, you might suggest that your son reach out to his advisor now to inquire about beefing up his schedule just a tad. If not, he’ll have just three real classes for half a semester. Elon 101 isn’t very demanding.

Good luck!

Thank you for the replys. He is going to talk to his advisor. I’m thinking that we are paying for 4 classes he should get 4 ‘real’ classes. He did just find out that he got credit for 2 AP classes and most of the classes he listed on his wish list are now fulfilled. Maybe the registrar just needs us to tell them what else he is interested in.

Definitely contact his advisor. It can all be done by email pretty easily.

My D had 19 credits first semester as well. They don’t charge for the 19th credit if it’s Elon 101. Elon 101 isn’t a “real” class, it only lasts half a semester and there’s no papers or tests, etc (at least I don’t think there were any tests). Health is a real class but it too only lasts 1/2 semester.

OTOH, if he’s coming in with credit for 2 AP classes and he plans on attending Winter Term (which 90+% of freshmen do), he won’t be behind at all. If he is planning on pledging a frat, that occurs during second semester and can be quite time-consuming - it might be better to take a full load first semester and a lighter load in the spring.

Even if he can’t get this straightened out now, he will have a chance to meet with his advisor during Orientation (I’m pretty sure) and he can figure it out then. The day before classes start is designated as Drop/Add day, so he won’t be the only one changing his schedule.

Thanks for the advice lafalum84. I’ve got a little bee in my bonnet about him having as many credits as possible. I have a D at a school that only recognizes her year in the school status as opposed to her credits for registration purposes. She went in with a lot of Ap’s and takes classes with the class above her. Because she registers with her class (later than the class above her) she gets the ‘bad’ times and the ‘bad’ professors. At $54k/year I’m not happy at all about the situation. I LOVE Elons policy to register according to the number of credits the student has. I’ve been looking at the classes that currently have space and looking up the proffs on the rateing web site. So far, nothing has jumped out at us. I’ll keep up my search.
