So my D will be doing Freshman Fest with Hillel - arriving Aug 26, 5 pm, with FF starting at 7 pm. That gives us two hours for move-in.

I'm definitely staying over that night - too much for me to drive home that night. My question is, should I stay till Saturday to actually help her (and potentially buy additional things she needs)? I'm pretty sure I can find a nice beach in Delaware to spend the day on Friday!

(I asked D and she thought I should stay till Sat... but that's not based on anything at all!)

When we dropped my son off, the 2 hours to settle him in was enough time. My husband even did a quick run for a case of bottled water and we re-arranged the room in that time. Other than the water, we pretty much had taken care of everything in advance and brought it with us. Granted, moving in a boy tends to be easier than a girl (I have experience with each). My son had a fraction of what my daughter had freshman year.

We didn’t stay over because we had to go home, reload the car and take my daughter to Boston the next day. I think my son was glad to get rid of us!

Thanks. D is away every summer at camp and we just dump her stuff in the bunk and take off. Not sure why I think this will be different. Room set-up issues? Lofting the bed, even with stacker things, like we saw on our dorm tour last month?

She can certainly make her bed and unpack without me.

My son had a corner room (in Lane Hall) which is a double, but smaller and laid out differently than the hallway rooms. The bed came bunked. Neither boy wanted to be in the top bunk (they discussed this in advance), so we came prepared with a tape measure to see how we can fit un-bunked beds in the room. It wasn’t easy but we managed (L-shape configuration).

The beds are designed to be raised up to (I think) 24" (this info is somewhere on the website). Some kids put the refrigerator, and/or stacked drawers under a lofted bed which may require risers. My son ended up putting the refrigerator/microwave in his closet, but I think that would be difficult for a girl because they need the closet space for their clothes.

We had plenty of time to make his bed, put away his things, set up his computer/printer, etc. in that 2 hours.

We saw a room in Russell that had the beds lofted on plastic stackers - the kind you get from Target… doesn’t seem so hard but she probably she can’t do it herself.

^^uninvolved party here, but advice: the plastic stackers crack and break; BBB has wooden ones; much better…and yes, she can’t probably do it alone, but I’m sure someone in the dorm (or on Freshfest) can help her…

It took us 3 trips to Walmart, all day and into the night to settle our daughter. (television cable hook up, full length mirror placement, UDEL internet, etc.) We were glad that we stayed over, and so was she.

PS…have your husband bring his tool box! =]

I just checked into those Delaware beaches… and they are two hours from campus! Now I’m thinking a day in Philly with my S (who hasn’t been there yet) would be better! There’s a lot there that I think he’d like.

We stayed over for our D last year we stayed busy the next day finding her odds and ends around town. We saved some shopping for that friday because of the no tax in Delaware thing. We also got the Hilton on priceline for 41$ so it was worth it the Hilton is near the mall and has an outdoor pool so it was a good choice.

We stayed at that Hilton last time for $45. Didn’t realize it had the pool. I’m thinking the extra night will be worth it to help her get everything she needs. Thanks!

My son is also moving in on the 26th for FF. We are going to stay until Saturday and go back to help with the final set up. When we moved my older son in, it was a long day. I might suggest to my husband that we go to Longwood Gardens (botanical) or King of Prussia. Philadelphia is also a good idea and a reasonable distance from Newark.

The Priceline deals make staying a much easier choice and there is a lot to see in the area if you have a free day. We got a Longwood Gardens membership. There is something beautiful to see every season.
If you have any Bank of America /ATM/debit card, you can get free weekends at certain nearby museums [Museums on Us®](<a href=“Bank of America's Dedication to Support Arts & Culture”>http://museums.bankofamerica.com/)
DD used the plastic risers for 3 years without a problem and is passing them along for next year. We found the Target in Wilmington, while further away, a tiny bit less hectic than the local stores for last minute shopping. There is a Christmas Tree next to it and a Trader Joes in the same area.
Target is opening in October in the Christiana Mall - lucky for you new parents!

Students arriving on campus for a specific reason (ie Freshman Fest) can move in early. Upper classmen can move in on the 27th if they are doing Arrival Survival or want to pay an extra fee. Freshmen move in day is the 28th. Upperclassmen move in on the 29th.

Always a great deal! The Courtyard has an indoor pool and hot tub. It’s also walking distance to Dunkin Donuts, Cheeseburger in Paradise and Borders.
