Can this be prevented????

Yes, but only if you're in a sport....

eat healthy and exercise

Yes! I actually lost almost 15 pounds my freshman year.

Eat regularly and don't snack in-between is a general rule. Walk alot (you'll probably be doing this anyway) and do something to keep active (I like to dance). Don't sit in your room all night after you get finished with class. Go out and do something, whether it's walking a couple blocks to take in some fresh air, or going to visit some friends, do something that keeps you from sitting on your ass in your room in front of the tv or computer where you're more likely to snack mindlessly. Don't keep high-fat snacks in your room: baked lays, rice cakes, sugar-free popsicles and jello is okay. Cookies, ice cream, and cake isn't. Drink alot of water instead of soft drinks. I try not to have soft drinks unless I go to a sit-down restaurant (which since you're in college, probably won't be often as you're on a budget and those places can be expensive). I've been a little slacking in this lately though, but I'm going to try and start back when school starts. Drink some OJ every morning to keep your Vitamin C levels up, and take a multivitamin and/or a calcium supplement (or just drink milk) to keep you healthy. If you do all this, you will at least maintain your weight, if not lose a few pounds. You don't have to hit the gym 5x a week for an hour unless you're eating like a pig.

AU covered alot of it. I'd say eat/drink healthy, walk or ride a bike if you can instead of the bus (if its a blizzard or pouring rain, obviously the bus is the best plan). Go to the gym every once in a while, even if its only once or twice a week to walk a few laps. Play intramurals if you want. Get a job that requires you to stand/walk around--such as a restaurant, retail, etc. Sitting in an office chair all day won't do much.

Overall, just try to stay active and eat right :)

It's pretty simple: eat healthy and exercise.

My school health class brought in a guest speaker who said it's the Freshman 25 now. Don't know if it's true or not.

If you go to UCLA or Cornell, get ready for the freshman 115.

here's one article about it

Why? What in particular makes those 2 schools so fattening? :-)

I don't know UCLA

but Cornell's food is supposed to be some of the most amazing food in all. (It's due to their hotel management :) I don't go there but I have a buddy who's going there in the fall and completely psyched about it

Yeah, Cornell and UCLA are 1-2 for food quality rankings in universities.

i heard that too about frosh.

what bout u. chicago?

Fortunately, I can eat whatever I want, as much as I want, and not gain a pound!

well "ccrunner" you also apparently run cross country, which would explain your "miraculous" metabolism :)

yeah i have to say i love it too--i live it!
just kidding, i have been running every day, but not outside, just intervals on the elliptical machine. woohoo!

i bet it is the freshman [at least] 25 now, like dvlfnfv5 said.
but seriously, exercise, eat right, like everyone said, and you should be able to avoid it.

Presently, I could stand to gain a little weight freshman year. Maybe not 15, but 5-10 would be nice, if I do it healthily.

Yeah, except for me, it's really annoying. I've kept mildly active this summer (occasional tennis, sporadic runs on nice days)--but I've definitely stepped up my food intake (Chipotle and midnight snacks), and yet I've lost weight. (I was a steady 143-144 at the beginning of summer, and now I can't crack 141, and I've gone as low as 136.) My friends who are actively trying to lose weight hate me.

I really need to start lifting. And running consistently again--once track ended, I fell out of routine...though this is about the time I started training for XC last year, so I think I'll wait for this heat wave to pass and head back out there.

my orientation leader gained 25 lbs his first SEMESTER. Now that's scary.
