Freshman first few weeks

After orientation I realize that these first few weeks will be very important with meeting new people.

I'm not too into the IU adventure thing, so is there any advise for welcome week?

Also, moving into dorms. ( I live in Residence Scholars which is Johnston Hall of Ashton)

Hey, I live there this year too! Just be social, keep your door open, and go to welcome week events. They’re made to help you. Most importantly, remember that everyone is in the same situation as you and asking the same questions right now.

Edit: after reading your other thread, I see you’re a Kelley DA. I just got in Kelley this past spring. If you need any help/advice, pm me. I’ve taken most of the classes you’ll take this year.

If either of you has a car, hopefully you have a “D5” permit, which allows you to park directly across the street from Ashton Johnston. It is very convenient, and I think the permits are surprisingly easy to get (son had a D5 permit three of the four years he lived in Johnston). Parking there, you won’t have to move your car from the main E lots before football and basketball games. If you have an E permit already, you might contact RPS to see if you can upgrade.

I am waiting to see if I got that pass. But it does say lot D5 which is nice :)

When is Move In Day? Wednesday August 12? I was going to go just one day early.

Advice for Welcome Week:

1) Try to go to as many of the planned Welcome Week events as possible. Some of them might seem a little cheesy or weird, but they’re a really great way to get to know people. Plus you usually get free food/other free stuff, which is always a plus. CultureFest, Taste of IU, and Midnight Madness were lots of fun and definitely worth going to.
2) Leave your door open! On an all-singles dorm like Ashton this is especially important so that you can get to know as many as your fellow residents as possible.
3) Explore campus/downtown Btown/Kirkwood area with your floormates. Chances are that you aren’t completely familiar with campus just yet and this is the perfect time to explore and get lost without having to worry about finding your way to class in time.
4) Check out other campus food options besides the dining hall closest to your dorm (another good activity to do with floormates)
5) Go to the Student Involvement Fair. It actually occurs the week that class begin, but getting involved on a big campus like IU is so important and it really makes all the difference.
6) If you’re a guy, consider going through fraternity rush. There’s an event in Dunn Meadow that kicks off rush within the first several weeks of school. Go and check it out, you’re not obligated to pledge or anything of the sort if you’re not feeling it.
