I am a freshman in high school. I did decent my first semester and got a 3.5. So I took 18 credits and did alot of other activities my second semester, and now I am considering freshman forgiveness for calculus. My school requires that you fail a class in order to use freshman forgiveness, the F is not calculated in the gpa but it remains on the transcript. I still have 47% of my grade I can change, but if I do take freshman forgiveness .. how will it affect medical school???

I know it will not look great, but will I still have chances if I do well here on out? Is it better to risk it and get a D+ or C- and then retake it, or to just purposely fail the class and have the new grade count in the gpa?

I read something about how medical schools count the gpa with the first grade, and then the new grade. However, would they do that if the school requires you to have an F in order to use freshman forgiveness? Could I possibly later explain, that it was because I dropped the course?

Please help. Its a very tough situation!! :/

If you mean that you’re a freshman in college, your fears are correct. Freshman forgiveness, for that purpose, is moot. They’ll count all grades. If you’re a freshman in high school, then medical schools won’t care.

if you mistyped and you are a freshman in college…

not only will med schools see the F because it is on your transcript, it actually will be part of your GPA. when you apply to med school, you enter in every single one of your courses into the application system, and it re-calculates your GPA based on it’s own model. so an F will be 0.00 factored in, no matter what your school policy is.

so for med school, there is no such thing as freshman forgiveness. the program is great for people who will never have to show a transcript to anyone, but will just put a GPA on their resume. but it has no impact whatsoever for medical students.

yeah i meant freshman in college. so should i just get a D+ instead? because it is literally impossible i found out … to pass the class. that will mess up my gpa because then my gpa will be calculated with the d+. does this mean my dream of becoming a doctor is over? what should I do?

Can you not drop it with a W?

One D+ does not mean you need to give up your dream of being a doctor. If you take the standard 128 credit hours and continue your 3.5 average except your D+ in calculus your final GPA will be ~3.45 ie this will not keep you out of medical school. Although a very important factor, it is simply one factor in the admissions process.

“Continuing a 3.5 average” would certainly not help (a B/B- average certainly can keep you out of medical school). You’d want this D to be a one time thing and get lots of As from here on out.

yea like what BDM and VassarGrad said. med schools see the F and will be calculated by AMCAS. Just take the W
