i was just wondering if alot of freshman went off campus/like being off campus??
idk if imn going to get housing and was considering southgate or anywhere else thats close but off campus??? any opinions?

well if you havent signed up for housing than it is too late to do it anyways. if you have signed up for housing already but you dont know if you want to then this what ive got to say. about 4,000 freshman of the 7 or 8 thousand freshman going are staying housing. Mostly because it is limited. In my opinion,( if you already did housing a while back), you should stay on campus. Its a great experience!

Shawn, according to other posts (3 of the same, btw), UFwannab doesn’t have a good priority number (7000+) but was offered a room in Reynolds.

I responded:

Don’t accept the invitation if you can’t abide by the rules.

I don’t know why there are now 4 posts with the same info, but I wouldn’t encourge anyone to go into a housing contract with the intention of breaking the rules.

JMHO, but the name “UFwannab” might be the answer to this question;)

ctauber may have it right, posting:

3 new identical threads in an hour? Are you drinking now?

I have the same question about off campus for freshmen. My daughter had FSU as her final choice but we just found out that her priority number is over 8100 and were told it is very unlikely she will get on campus. We live in MN and don’t really know the area and I am really not comfortable sending her half way across the country without being confident she is in a safe place. Can someone please give me a realistic view of what Southgate is like - I like that it is just like a dorm and is on campus (she won’t have a car). I have seen a lot of negative, but then again I see a lot of negative postings about the on campus dorms also. This has really thrown a wrench into her decision to attend FSU - she has to decide by next week.

Mnparent, as the parent of a current freshman daughter, I completely understand your concerns! My daughter lives in Landis, but one of her friends from high school lives in Southgate and I have been to her room a few times. My daughter and her friend visit each other frequently, and I can tell you that Southgate is literally just across the street from Landis and to me feels as though it is on campus. There have always been lots of people walking in the area when I’ve been there, and if my daughter had not been able to get on-campus housing, I think that Southgate would have been the next best thing.

Living at SouthGate is practically like living on campus.

I lived one block away from campus my freshman year. I also didn’t have a car. I walked to class every day and walked to buy food and whatever else. When I moved further away from campus, I actually missed being able to walk everywhere.

loller: Where did you live freshman year? Besides Southgate, I am not sure what other options are available. Do most of the freshman not offered housing live somewhere together or are they typically spread out all over? She would really like to be with other freshman. I know that this is big place and the housing office has a lot of students to deal with, but I just wish they would be a little more helpful on suggestions on where to go or how she could find other freshmen to potentially room with off campus who are in the same boat. I would love any and all suggestions.

She can write on her apartment application that she wants to be roomed with other freshmen. I’d just make sure to stress, after you fill out all the paper work and pay the fees, that she wants to be with other freshmen.

I don’t want to advertise the place I lived my freshmen year. It wasn’t very nice. One thing I learned in my years is that you get what you pay for. I lived in a different place every year and the cheapest places were the worst and the most expensive were the best. My freshmen year apartment was less than $300 a month with utilities, internet, and TV included.

I’d recommend looking at apartments along Call Street. They are very popular. If you want some specific apartment names take a look at the FSU bus route maps: [Transportation and Parking | Seminole Express](http://parking.fsu.edu/Seminole%20Express/SES%20Routes.html) Each map has apartments labeled and they are all populated by students.

oh sorry i didnt see the other 3 post. my bad.

There are other threads on PRIVATE DORMS on the here on the FSU board. Use the search function. They are from about this time last year. I will try to look later for a post from this time last year I put together with this info.

I found it. A post from last year at this time:

Southgate is PRACTICALLY ON CAMPUS. It is just across the street from Landis and Gilchrist. It was built using Leon County bond funds (Leon County Educational Facilities Authority), and FSU actually has some part ownership similar to the arrangement at Heritage Grove. It was build using private/public money when there was not money in the state budget for a new dorm.

Hey, I just wanted to give my input as a current freshman living off-campus. I too did not get housing as I debated which College to go to and I now live in studio green.
I recommend Southgate, I stayed there once for a week as a junior in high school and it’s a nice place to live. You should try to sign up before long otherwise they might fill up.
Very close to campus with a dorm setting so you wont miss out on all the cool freshman year experiences (which is what I was worried about).
Studio green is OK, it’s close to campus but I don’t recommend staying here.
Don’t hesitate to ask me if you have any questions.

Hey FSU 777, I will be a junior in the fall lookin for off campus housing (i know i am very late). What is the pros/cons of Studio Green.

And what price you pay im trying to get less than 500

Hey Sid, I pay $795 a month with 7 meals a week utilities included. You can find cheaper rooms if that’s what you want at SG though.

Pros:Close to campus, pretty much like being on campus.
You will always have parking if your willing to pay $300 a semester

Cons:Food is not good
Building is kind of dingy be sure to walk around on floors other than the first one and ask people who live there if you can see their rooms. The tour is VERY misleading.
IMO Overpriced
Hot water went out for two separate times for combined about 10 days this semester

Since your a junior you should consider the apartments nearby, I heard the Grand Marque is great and it’s literally right next to SG.

^ Are you in their apartments or dorms? I signed a lease recently for them but my price was a lot less than that (around $500).
I’m guessing you’re in the dorms since you’re talking about floors and mealplans, but how is the internet there? I’m dreading the thought of having to pay for my own internet connection just for the occasional online gaming… >_<

Yeah DNerd im in a “premium double” which is pretty much a bigger room with our own bathroom.
Back in highschool I used to play WoW and goodluck trying to play on this connection lol. It really depends on the time of day but I took a speedtest once and this is what I got:
<a href=“Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test”>Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test;

Sometimes it sucks to load normal youtube videos let alone online gaming. Maybe it woukld be a little better with a router instead of in the wall, either way gaming’s going to be tough.

You can’t truly hate on the dorms, ive gotten over 7 megs before :(

But 1 meg is horrible

Just tested again behold: <a href=“Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test”>Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test;

yikes…
Thanks for the heads up!

Hi - my daughter is will also be a freshman at FSU this fall. She’s starting summer session in June so we are headed to orientation next week. We’ll check out Southgate and I can let you know how it goes.
