Beginning Freshman year at UNC this fall. Any guidance on courses to take, courses to avoid during freshman year welcomed. Interested in Business / Premed. Thanks.

Folks - No response to my previous post. Maybe I should change my name or something. My CTOPS is for June 7 and I would just like some help on what courses to take / what to avoid first semester / first year. Help on how many credits to take, what would be a moderate doable course load, what courses to take etc. will be highly welcomed. The whole exercise of college course scheduling seems overwhelming what with exemptions / placement / getting courses of your choice. Thanks again.

Being Premed, I'm assuming you'll be taking BUNCHES of science classes---I'm pre-pharmacy and I know in the past 2 years and based on what I've signed up for for this year, it's a lot of science. Because of this, personally I wouldn't take 18 hours, especially as a freshman--give yourself a chance to adjust to college, and get a taste of science at UNC. I'd stick with around 15, that way you'll have time to adjust, but also have room to drop a class if you find out a professor is totally horrible once you get there. ALWAYS BUILD IN ROOM FOR CHANGE!!! If you want help with picking out classes, science ones at least--and maybe opinions on some others/professors, feel free to send me a message and let me know what you're thinking of/who the professors are---otherwise I'll end up rambling! But just to make you feel better about college, if you haven't placed out of the electives (soci, anth, hist, etc) I'd definitely work in one of them with your science classes to save your sanity! :) I'm here if ya need me!

Thanks. WIll post as soon as I get something worked up. Is it possible yo know what you can get exempted from just by looking up the freshman info. or do you need official guidance?

I already have 8 credits from my AP Biology in which I made a 5.I'm taking some classes during summer at local community class and planning to transfer those to Carolina.I'll be having 8 credits,if I successfully complete those course:Psychology(3 credits)Sociology(3 credits)and Fit and Well for life(2 credits). So I'll be having 16 credits, may be more if I get good scores in the APs I took this year.
So,does that mean I can skip my freshman year since I already have 16 credits?I'm a pre-med major too.

I would just focus on taking care of as many perspectives/other requirements as you can. The first year guide as a list of common courses used to fulfill these, and I would recommend just perusing that list to find something that sounds interesting to you. Most of these courses will be intro-level and won't be that hard, which will give you a nice adjustment to college.

Here's a link to the things you can get credit for based on APs, SAT2s, and the SAT....sometimes this is more useful than the advisors/or at least a good thing to have looked over before talking to them.

On Student Central, there is also a section that will list what classes remain for your major/minor based on what UNC lists as your courses taken

Since I just started taking classes,I'll not get my credits before August. But registration at Carolina is on June.So how will I be placed in the right courses?

For math you are supposed to have taken the SAT II.
For English they can use the SAT I
You can look at the first year guide online. There are many requirements besides classes you can get credit for through AP....like freshmen seminars, electives, ...

Atlmom: AP and IB(HL) exams will be considered for math, too.

Take econ 101, it fulfills a lot of prerequisits and its pretty interesting.

I've heard the exact opposite about econ 101...all my business mjr friends have hated it and everyone's told me to avoid that one. Anth 10 and Hist 23 (popular music), Musc 144 (country) are all fun and easy/perspective fillers.

Yes Jack that is correct but for the june registration, they ask for the sat II math since ap/ib grades dont' come in until july/aug....

My advice is to get busy on your science if you are premed and look at their pre req in the general college....under advising for those kind of majors. Lots of bio, chem, organic chem, anat/phy etc. to get through.....
but BALANCE YOUR SCHEDULE.
