So there's a Freshman Honors Seminar class that I really want to get into but I'm guessing it would be really popular and competitive to register for. Does anyone know if I can register for the class before my orientation June 27-29. How many students do they usually take?

Which class, specifically? Another question for ya: did you get a letter from the college introducing Honors Seminars?

Make sure it's a good honors seminar...I took one I thought would be really interesting--chaos theory--but the class turned out to be a dud, and I wasted one of my precious electives...but at most, each class has 15 students, usually fewer

I received the letter last week, but from what I can recall it was vague on how to register. The class I want is about the UN Security Council and the professor sounds really fascinating. I imagine that kids interestd in International Relations will all want to take the class.

has anyone ever taken the Baseball and American Culture seminar?
Info on that?

thanks

i'm really confused on the whole freshman seminar thing

1) are they only open to CAS students? I'm in Steinhardt for Communication, would I be able to take it?

2) do i have to be invited to it aka they're exclusive or they're open to everyone you just have to apply for them?

3) how benenficial are these classes? Do they take the place of your electives?

4) what are the pros/cons of freshman seminars?

I remember having to rate my top few choices on some sheet they mailed me, then having to mail it back to them. This was 3 yrs ago though.

I'm in Stern, so no, freshman seminars are not exclusive to CAS students. I do believe you have to be invited to apply because there aren't very many seminars and they're all fairly small size-wise. Yes, they take up elective credits; the "benefits" depend on you and the prof. They're nice because you get to interact with some pretty well-known professors & experts in their fields, and the subjects are pretty eclectic.

can gsp students register for freshman seminars?

I don't know who can or can't take Freshman Seminars, but I highly recommend anything that CAS Dean Santirocco teaches. I took his Classical Mythology Freshman Seminar, and it was fantastic - very interesting, good discussion and insight, and generous grading. I'm sure anything else he teaches will be equally great.

any info on the baseball and culture seminar????
thanks

For Fall05, all I know was that the prof was an expert on dodgers, back when they were still in new york...I'm a diehard Giants fan, so I stayed away from that...I heard it wasn't too bad, just a couple of essays

Honors Scholars have first pick. After all of them register, then all freshman are eligible register. They're very competitive and there's no guarantee you'll get your first choice. If you get a good one, they're worth it, otherwise not because you don't get that many electives and you don't want to waste one.

So if I'm not an Honor Scholar what's the soonest I can register or do they wait till all applications are in before they decide?

I received a letter encouraging me to sign up for FHSems, but not one telling me that I was an Honors Scholar. So, maybe that's not true? or maybe that letter was sent to everyone...

So i know this thread is really old, but its exactly the question I need a clear anwer to. If I am not a CAS Presidential scholar, but received a letter telling me about the seminars have I been invited? Or is this letter something everyone gets?

u dont need to be any scholar to sign up for a freshman honor seminar. i signed up for one this fall (incoming freshman) and so did a ton of other ppl

I tried to sign up for Latin America at the Start of the 21st Century but it says I need an access code. Did anyone else have this problem?

are u gonna be a freshman? did u have orientation yet?

Yes, I'm an incoming Stern Freshmen. I had orientation on the 13th.

yea for my orientation (CAS incoming freshman) you had to get the access code from them. for us, it was in the arts and sciences building, in the advising floor. we got the access code from them. idk how it is for people from stern tho, it could be the same thing, or something diff.
