Freshman housing assignments

no there is cabletv available in the rooms, they just never wound up watching the TV in their rooms, preferred the common area room.

D did not have tv, neither did most of her friends. Some guys had a tv for sports/video games; otherwise, they would watch from Netflix on the laptop or watch in the lounge (but typically, did not watch tv at all).

My S will be in Russell A and I know there is no A/C. I have to assume that holds true for all Russell buildings. On a positive note, it is centrally located which makes it close to many classroom buildings. Russell rooms and shaped like a “Z” and you can find a typical floorplan on UDEL’s website under Student Housing. You may have to click around, but it’s there and we’ve been playing with options for furniture layout.

My d was in dickinson last year. She had a 24" tv and put it on the shelf of her closet. Since the closet doesn’t have a door, both she and her roommate were able to see it.

Thank you to all who responded regarding TV. Very helpful.

rich1074, when i go to student housing and enter the building name, floor plan, room, i get nothing. no layout show. daughter can’t do it either. we use macs. how did you get to see the floor plan?

Do you have popups blocked, bridgemom? The actual floor plan pops up in another window.

found the floor plans, thanks. I guess if was going to design the webpage, I’d have the user taken directly to the floor plans when selected on the dorm info page, instead of having to click “site map”, and then click on the building (that you had already selected on the previous page!)

I’d second samiamy. I never had a tv in my room, and I was fine with watching everything on my laptop, or going to a common area to watch. (That way you’re not in your room by yourself all the time too.) You can pretty much assume that whatever you don’t bring/forget to bring with you, someone else across the hall or next door will.

For instance, I managed to last the entirety of freshman year without a microwave, vacuum, and all of 2nd semester without a fridge. If I did need something desperately, my parents would just turn it into a day visit and drop off stuff/ take me out to dinner or something like that. It worked out great :)

Can anyone tell me what the desks are like in dickinson? I can see the dimensions are 24 x42 but do they have drawers? If so how many? D’s pile of “stuff” to bring keeps growing! I’m not sure there will be room for her to live in it once she moves it all in! lol! I expect to be taking a lot back with me once the harsh reality of 1/2 of an 11 x 11 room sinks in.

I’m guessing/hoping they have a small drawer across the lap area and hopefully some on one side of it.

D got her laptop lock. Is there a way to secure it to the desk? we were hoping for a crossbar so we would not have to screw this thing into the underside of the desk and potentially damage it.

Oh, one more question. Is the internet wireless in the dorms? I seem to be seeing conflicting info on this. Does D need a cable to “plug in” to internet in her dorm?

12 days to go! can’t believe it.

Lefty, it is wireless but they recommend and ethernet cable to insure better speed and access. Good question on lock. I assumed there is something that D can secure the lock to even if not on the desk but don’t know for sure.

Can anyone tell me what a double in
Smyth hall is like?

summerchica: Go to this URL and select Smyth Hall on the drop down list.

[University of Delaware Facilities Website - Residence Halls Information](http://www.facilities.udel.edu/rhalls.aspx)

Then select your exact room in Smyth to get a floor plan. Is this what you are looking for?

summerchica: my son was on 3rd floor smyth last year & loved it…great location & nice facilities. As to the dorm, I was surprised at the roominess of the closets…a shelf above the hangar bar and built-in cubby hole type shelving from shelf to floor in one section. Raising the bed provided a lot of storage too. After trial & error, determined that box fan (unsightly as it is) was the absolute best way to cool the room (it was extraordinarily hot at the start of Fall semester). Found the room to be warm all year round…never slept with more than a sheet except 1 or 2 nights. We also found that a rug really warmed up the appearance of the room. Best of luck!

Yes it is, thank you! But how social is it? Also, which buildings have single room suites? And which have transfer communities? I’m seeing that the independence complex is the newest?

Summerchica, my D was on the second floor of Smyth last year. She absolutely loved it, made a lot of friends on both the girls and boys side. Also a great location and close to dining. There are some private hidey holes to go study if needed and a kitchen downstairs as well as laundry that’s probably not as busy as in a lot of the larger dorms.

There is no A/C so get a window fan. Move in on the 3rd floor might be a bit harder as you have to use the stairs, but there should be help if you’re a freshman.

Is it really possible to make room changes after September 12th. My son got a single at Rodney, and he’s not happy, nor am I . I called housing and said he asked for a double, but they said that unfortunate thy can’t do anything until after September 12th. I’m upset that he will be alone and really feel freshmen should be put in doubles. I don’t understand the logic behind this…when so many upperclassmen want singles and can’t get them Any advice or knowledge on tranfers would be appreciated

summerchica - my son was also on the 3rd floor of Smyth last year and loved it - wouldn’t have changed a thing, it’s a very social dorm.
