Freshman housing at Chico

Hello, my son is planning on attending CSU Chico, and we are wondering if anyone has any suggestions on best dorms to try to get into? Thanks for any information!

@GoldenWest

There are 5 different dorm areas:
-Konkow Hall
-Mechoopda & Esken Hall
-Shasta & Lassen Hall
-Sutter Hall
-Whitney Hall
There’s only one campus owned apartment:
-University Village

Whitney and Sutter are known as the better dorms because many say that they are the most social dorms (easier to make friends) and the rooms here are more spacious than the other options. Whitney and Konkow has some single rooms (Whitney has 16 total single rooms and Konkow has one single room per house). In University Village, single rooms are quite abundant but students complain that these apartments are a lot less social (harder to make friends) but it all depends on personal preference.

I got a “Whats Next” paper from Chico and it shows how to apply for housing as early as possible. It says that the initial housing payment($1,000) can be accepted as early as March 28th, but the actual housing application will open up on April 12th, at 6 p.m.

Take a closer look at your housing options here:

My son is a Jr @ Chico and spent his freshman year in Lassen. I recall Konkow, Mechoopda & Esken being a little off campus and themed (honors, sports, international, etc). They’d be appropriate if your kid is in one of those programs. UV us a bus ride away and has discrete apartments and no dining hall. (I wouldn’t put a freshman there). Sutter was primarily for transfer students.

The other 3 are plenty social. One thing my son like about Lassen was the dorm room doors can be easily left open (also true at Shasta but, not Whitney) making it easy to tell who is around as you walk down the hall.

Thank you so much @NCalRent and @liiiiiiiiiiiiiil; I really appreciate your taking the time to respond, this is very helpful! And yes, my son will be parked at the computer at 5:55pm on April 12! :wink:
