Freshman Housing- Preston Residential College & others?

Starting a new one here, though know in January there was a thread. We are at the point of completing the housing form so one more stab at finding out some things. I plan to call Housing Dept on Monday, but in the meantime had some questions.

If not honors, Capstone, etc. and don’t want to live in Quad, any recommendation for a male? He visited and doesn’t like the set up of Quads. (surprise to me since I thought FOR SURE the single room would be a must for him…as an only child!) He claimed the hallways were too tight and too many people in one apartment-like setting. I thought it seemed nice, but gotta go with what he thinks.

He’s a business major, which will be East Quad, so that living learning community option is off the table. As I understand it, you can go after the L L Community idea in two different ways. One is to live wherever your choice LL is, regardless. Other is to pick a dorm or two that you like and see if that LL is anywhere close to what you might get involved in. That would then sway your first pick. Sound correct??

Anyway, the Preston Residential College…anyone have intel about this? Seems like a co-ed frat/sorority type living where the students are encouraged to do a lot together, even eating sometimes. But it looks to be focused on Leadership and Community Action, which is not really a strong interest or strong suit for him. Would it be OK to still live there? Is it a nice environment for a shy kid who won’t know anyone on campus? Seems like in a good location.

Lastly, location being a consideration, but not deal breaker. He will be on the end of campus where business school and rec center are for both classes and his plan to play basketball/work out will fill his time (again…won’t know anyone at first). If anyone has a good other option for a residence hall that’s not on the clear other side of campus - like it looks for Columbia Hall, I would appreciate it. Or maybe it’s really not that far…just looks like it on the map?

Thanks to any input you may have!!

If you don’t get a response here, I would check the parent page and get the contact info for your regional group. They were a great source of info when my son was entering last year.

my brother lives in Preston and loves it. he lived there freshman and now sophomore year. You do have to do a special application for it. It definitely the cleanest and nicest dorm. It doesnt get gross and loud on the weekend like other ones do. Im thinking about going there next year and maybe living there too. Also the eating together thing is emphasized at first but doesnt really happen unless you really want to participate and you dont have to be a leader to live there.
