Freshman Housing Questions

I was admitted to the University of Minnesota a few weeks ago but am not planning on accepting the offer until I hear back from the rest of the colleges I applied to. But the UMN is a top contender for me. I saw online that you can fill out the housing application before accepting admission into the university. I was wondering if there is any benefit in doing so? Also, what is the difference between the housing application fee and the housing guarantee payment?

If you think there’s a good possibility you’ll go to UMN, I’d pay the $50 application fee and secure your place in line for housing. They go by application date when prioritizing housing assignments. My son isn’t sure where he’s going either but he was interested in a certain LLC and a couple of dorms in particular, so it was worth the peace of mind to get the application in early just in case. They guarantee housing for all freshman, so if you truly don’t care where you end up, then it probably doesn’t matter, but you might end up having to bus from a dorm in the St. Paul campus.

The housing guarantee you don’t pay until after you’ve accepted your admission and housing assignments are out.

All right, thank you!
