A friend of mine wanted to know where he should get housing at UNC, he was looking for a social housing arrangement where he could meet other freshman, but at the same time didn't wanna end up in a dorm that was nasty and what not....any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hinton James is the quintessential freshman experience dorm. They renovated it either last year or the year before, so it's not too nasty. Morrison is also a good dorm, but it's very hard to get in seeing as it was renovated very recently (2-3 years ago), and is on a good location on campus (it's on the very north side of south campus, so it's not too long of a walk to class, yet not too long of a walk to the south campus parties, a lot of Morrison is taken by upperclassmen before freshmen apply for housing). Craige North was built like 5 years ago, so I assume that's a fairly nice dorm. Craige and Ehringhaus seem to be the dorms people want to avoid and that mostly freshmen end up getting. Not all the rooms have air conditioning in these dorms, but it's not too bad a problem after labor day or so. North Campus generally has nicer dorms, but not as many freshmen live on north campus.

i lived in ehringhaus as a first-year and totally loved it there! if you want a social experience meeting other underclassmen, definitely choose hinton james or ehringhaus. DON'T choose HJ north, ehringhaus south, etc.--they're not at all social.

Choose Ehringhaus, Craige or Hinton James. A majority of the freshmen live in these dorms and although they are not as nice as some other dorms, you definitely have a lot of opportunities to meet people and enjoy he true freshmen experience.

Hinton James isn't renovated... they were going to do it but ran out of funds on the Morrison project

Yeah, not renovated, but it is totally air-conditioned now, right? That's not true for Craige/Eringhaus so it's still probably a better option than those two.

It really depends on what you want. I was fortunate enough to be on North Campus, but most of my friends ended up being on South Campus. So I get to class faster, and wake up later, but when I go hang out, I get back later as well. Personally, I like living on North Campus. I probably would have made more friends on South Campus, but physics 116 first semester turned me into somewhat of a hermit.

As a freshman, is North really that anti social??? I am aware that South is the way to go in terms of parties and what not, but North seems quite alluring in many ways. How is the social scene up there as an underclassman?

non-existent..at least that's how it is in my dorm (grimes, on upper quad).

i'm a sophomore, so i already have friends at carolina, but i would have been so lonely if i had lived here last year! seriously, south campus is THE first-year experience.
