Freshman Housing - Who has received information and when did you pay your deposit?

I understand that Freshman housing choices are done in order of the date you paid your deposit. For those that have received a housing email, when did you pay your deposit?

If I recall correctly we paid our deposit in early January and received the housing application on 3/14,

A couple of months ago in Jan. D just checked email today and saw the request for the housing portal sign-in. It may have come earlier but she doesn’t check her Buckeye email often. We did fill out the housing info today and paid the $352 deposit.

It is my understanding that the housing application requires the student to list which part of campus and the housing cost level (1,2 or 3) along with the meal plan. Is this correct or is there more to it such as ranking dorm priorities?

Ah, I wonder about this as well. For example, I want room rate IIA, but there are not that many. Could they run out, you think?

My son was accepted December 14, and he paid the $100 deposit on December 17. He got the housing contract email on March 15, and he submitted the housing contact and paid the $350 fee on March 16. He wants to be in a double room with AC, so he signed up for “Rate I North” as his first choice, “Rate I South” as his second, “Rate I West” as his third choice, and “Rate II South” as his fourth choice. He also specified on his housing contract that the rate/location choice was his priority.

@ReasonableDad2 You’re correct, the application asks you to rank #1-4 which rate and part of campus you’d prefer to live in. It does not allow you to pick specific dorms. It asks you to pick a meal plan, although my understanding is that the meal plan can be changed at any time during the school year. The application also asks questions like what type of hall set up you prefer, such as same gender on whole floor, or mixed gender on same floor, same gender or mixed gender bathrooms, etc.

re: meal plans “You can change your plan through the second Friday after classes start each semester. You can also change your plan from semester to semester.” https://dining.osu.edu/dining-plans/columbus-campus-dining-plans/

Hello! Thank you for sharing housing information. Do you know if room rate IIAs are available? Thank you

accepted November first wave. Paid deposit mid February. Received housing email yesterday 3/29.

Is it true most freshmen no matter what end up in 4 to a room???

The chances are higher for a quad or triple, as the upperclassmen who have already chosen prefer 2 to a room unless they’re in a suite (which freshmen can’t have). So most doubles are taken unless they’re non AC buildings.

My son sent his housing deposit in as soon as we got it in March 2016 (he’s a junior now) and he was placed in a double in Raney which was a new dorm with AC. So it is possible for freshman to get doubles in new dorms.

Possible, but not highly likely. Especially with the 2 year requirement in place now. That year (2016) had several upperclassmen moved from dorms into apartments paid for by the University because they didn’t have enough rooms. They have made adjustments now. So it’s unlikely a freshman outside of a learning community or scholars group will be placed in a new north dorm. There is always an off chance, but I would never bank on it - or even expect it. Rather, be delightfully surprised if I ended up with one.

@bucks724 I have not seen anywhere where it states that Freshmen cannot have a suite either. He filled out the entire housing application with me reading it too.

It’s not specifically stated, but they are reserved for upperclassmen. Freshmen do not get suites. They can get a quad with a bathroom in the room, but not a “suite”. Those are the first rooms to go in the housing lottery for upperclassmen.

I committed this past Wednesday and still haven’t gotten anything about housing, can’t fill out the contract. Should I be concerned?
