Freshman housing

can someone explain the freshman housing-I know that not all freshman are guaranteed a place on campus-about About how many do live off campus? are off campus freshman included in activities on campus-does it really matter if you live on campus or off for freshman year?

I’m not sure of the percentage of freshmen who live off campus, but a wild guess would be around 10%. I’ve always felt that it’s advantageous for freshmen to live on campus. It is easier to be involved in activities and it is also easier to make a lot of friends. You will also enjoy being on campus during football week-ends.

For Fall 2010 freshmen class, 34% lived off campus. There is nothing precluding off campus freshmen from being involved in on campus activities. It is easier to participate in evening and weekend activities if you live on campus. Some off campus housing is within walking distance of campus and would probable not be a big difference than living on campus. If the student lives further away, they have to put in a little more effort to attend those activities by either taking the campus shuttle or driving.

WOW-34%. That is much higher than I thought. I guess I should have looked it up!

If a student didn’t apply early, it will be a rough for freshmen students seeking on-campus housing. The waitlist started almost a month earlier this year than last – D’s two cohorts from her HS are both on this list (currently stuck in the 100+ zone). I wouldn’t wait to secure housing of other means.

My D secured housing but has decided not to attend.

My son is #8 on the waiting list so we are pretty optimistic he will get in…

I’m pretty sure I’ll have to live off campus, it’s a little late to be applying for housing. What are the main apartments freshman live at? What are the closest apartments to campus?

Here are a few alternatives – I can’t tell you anything about them (in terms of student opinions) but hopefully a student will offer feedback:
Eagle’s West
Two 21 Armstrong (both these apt. complexes are around 2-3 blocks from campus)

Here are a few private Residence halls that are close by:
Cambridge Residence hall (next door to Auburn Hotel, also has its own food service)
Greystone Dorm
Wittel Dormitory (all female residence hall)
There may be others, call housing to check. All the locations listed above have websites.

While the list of apartments below are not close to campus, they are on the Tiger Transit line. Some have roommate matching services and furniture rental:
Veranda at Auburn
Legacy at Auburn
University Heights Apts.
Exchange at Auburn
Creekside of Auburn
Garden District Apts.

There are others besides what is listed above. All have websites. You can also try Auburnapartmentguide.com
Good Luck! Hopefully you can find an available spot.

I’m a freshman (soon to be Soph.) and I live in Eagles West Apartments. It’s walking distance to the business school and the apartments are really nice. If you don’t get on campus, check out Eagles West. I have a two bedroom with a pledge brother and couldn’t be happier. Only bad thing is the workout room, but that’s what the Rec Center is for.
