Freshman Housing

Can anyone talk about what the freshman housing is like at Duke? For example, how big are the dorms compared to other colleges? What kind of rooms are the norm (mostly singles/doubles/triples/quads)? What is the best dorm and what are the differences between the dorms?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! :)

Mostly singles and doubles are offered to freshmen. The exception is Wilson, which is suite-style housing, although I don't know the specific details of room layout there.

Room size varies greatly, but you don't get to pick your dorm, so it really doesn't matter at this point. Randolph and Blackwell (two of the three air-conditioned dorms) are supposed to have the smallest rooms in general.

Many singles are available on East, so if you prefer that, it shouldn't be a problem in the first year. This is not true for sophomore year (you can't get singles through the lottery), although sophomores can get singles through some selective living groups or living/learning communities.

Bell Tower is the best - but it's random so there's no way to guarantee that you could get a room there.

representing Jarvis...I must say it is a fantastic dorm:) Not airconditioned or anything, but this year we're all literally best friends. There's only about 90 students in both Jarvis and Aycock, so you get to know everyone pretty well. The rooms are generally HUGE, as well as the closets. My roommate and I lucked out and got two massive walk in closets, so I ended up putting my dresser in mine so I could save tons of floor space.

I adore Jarvis!!

ok guys i have just one question..how r the bathrooms?

Also, what are the room estimates given to us in our packets for? Is that a triple?

All of the dorms are hall-style, except wilson. The bathrooms aren't bad at all. All I know is Jarvis, but it can't be too different elsewhere. We share ours with about 15 girls, and there are 3 stalls and 3 showers. You think "woah, 15 girls," but it's not bad at all. I've never had to wait for a shower ever, and it's generally pretty clean (of course sometimes that depends on how your hall staff is...). I believe most of the other dorms are basically the same.

EXCEPT wilson...there you share 1 bathroom with your suite, and you are responsible for cleaning it. Don't know much more than that.

maguo- I'm not sure what you mean about room estimates. Is that money, or size? We never got a size estimate as they all greatly differ from room to room...

I was referring to the price estimates listed here: http://dukefinancialaid.duke.edu/prospect_statistics.html

It sounds like that estimate was for a double, non A/C. These are the rates for next year.
