Freshman housing?

hello fellow BUers 2010!
so i was looking at their housing information and i was wondering what dorm i’m suppose to pick. they actually ask you if you have a preferred house or emplacement on campus but i do not know much about the BU campus thus i was wondering what you guys were going to do. also do you think you can enter in a “speciality” house in your freshman year ( like the french house for example) or would that be a bad idea? anyways see you guys next year!

an add on to the question: which house is the best for partying? and the best for studying?

from what i have heard...warren towers is where most freshmen stay so it's really rowdy and stuff. so not a great place to choose if you want a really quiet atmosphere. however, the french house that nemo2211 talked about is a brownstone, which is like a house, so it's a lot quieter. but also the rooms are better than those at warren. you should also look at the location of your dorm and the college you are in because it's no fun to trek 2 miles in the freezing cold!

Has anyone lived in the Hojo? Is it quiet/nice rooms? The location seems great but does not having a dining hall ever create problems? It used to be a hotel, so it must be pretty good, right?

oo that sound pretty awesome, thanks jessli88. yea even though i want to go to parties and have the normal college experience, i'm not sure i want to step into vomit or bump into some half naked passed out people on my way to my room... hahah that would actually be pretty hilarious but definitely not on a daily basis. do most houses have kitchens with cooks or simply kitchens where you need to cook? ummm i have so many questions about college, i cannot wait to be there and figure them out!

Haha, nemo2211, you got it right when you said you didnt want to step into vomit or half-naked people, because in fact, these occur more often than you think, the vomit mostly though.

The only brownstones that have kitchens within them are called "apartment" style, and since it's an apartment, no there are no cooks. In fact, the "cooks" are only in the dining halls which are only in the large dorms like warren, west, and towers.

The Hojo is very similiar to the big dorms except less freshman. It is very very convenient to SMG, COM and ENG. It has no dining hall as someone mentioned, which is really a down-side, however this gives you more incentive to try the different ones around. Closest to the Hojo are the dining halls in Towers, Shelton, Warren and even Myles.

bost88, my friend who goes to BU says the Hojo is really gross but she's only one of like ten thousand people, so i don't know. i think the reason why she doesn't like it is because the beds are bunkbeds.

oh man I would kill myself if I had to sleep on bunkbeds... I would be able to handle the bottom bunk, but climbing up to the top bunk whenever you wanted to sit down would KILL me!

How far is the College of Science building from Warren Towers and The Towers

^ There's a map on the BU site that shows all the buildings so you can estimate the distance.

CAS is basically across the street from Warren, and about 3 blocks from The Towers.

ok this may seem retarded but what is the HoJo? house of journalism, house of johannesburg? i mean really what is it/ what does it stand for?

what are you guys getting as your meal plan? because if the cafeteria food is gross i'll mainly eat out i guess, but that will be expensive after a while... any insights on how to deal with food?

Hojo used to be a Howard Johnson hotel...hence Hojo.

Don't forget West Campus which consists of 3 buildings overlooking the playing fields and most have huge windows with views of the river and Boston skyline. Close to the new arena, Student Village, and rec center that is brand new and has traitional sports, track, plus things like climbing walls and yoga. More geen space and one of the best dining halls plus about 85% Freshman. Still very social but not as intensely social as Warren. Noisy but has quieter areas. It is quire a walk to CAS and SMG although you can take the T from the corner for a low fee and its free coming back. If you don't have 8:00 a.m. classes the walk is fine and interestng and good excercise but can be annoying too.

jessli88, you're friend said the hojo is really gross?? hmm...I put that down as my first choice b/c I thought it would be nicer/quieter than warren yet still a great location. And the apparently (from the BU housing site) the bunkbeds just mean that the beds are raised over each person's desk so each person still gets their own corner and you are not sleeping under/over someone...it also saves saves a ton of room.....plus they have their own bathrooms...how can you beat that???

It's not really gross. Its def more modern that warren or west, and has many advantages over the typical freshman dorms. Don't worry about it too much, youll have a great time there, and will have the option to move out at any time, if it comes down to you not liking it at all. Best wishes next year.

I just posted this in another housing thread, but I figured I'd add it here to:

People always tend to give Warren and West a bad name, but for freshman, I really think they are the way to go. I love that everyone on my floor always leaves their doors open, that people are always in the common room, and that everyone knows everyone's names. We have a community, whereas people I know in "nicer" dorms don't know their neighbors' names, let alone their whole floor. All my friends are from my floor, and I can honestly say that even though I'm happy to be living in a bigger room next year, I am going to miss my freshman dorm!

Plus, some people are complaining about the cramped space: I find I have more than enough space in Warren. The closets are not too tiny. We have good sized dressers and lots of shelves. I brought stuff to raise my bed for extra storage and found I didn't need it. I actually felt like my friend in the HoJo had less space, but I wasn't there for long so I'm not a great judge. I think the rooms in Warren are slightly bigger than West, but don't hold me to that. That is all I wanted to say. You can really put down whatever you want on your survey; I just don't want people to be upset thinking they are going to be living in a horrible place if they end up getting placed in the "freshman dorms".

Oh and one more thing; I have yet to ever step in vomit or find someone passed out in my hallway or the like. People do come back drunk and sometimes loud, but it has never bothered me to the point of intense anger. It's annoying when you are tired, but that is what RA's and noise violations are for. It is really just something you get used to. All right...I'm getting off my soapbox now.

I don't really care where I end up (if I go to BU), but I REAAAAAAALLY want my own bathroom. I'd also prefer more than one roommate.

yeah. everything i read about the hojo seems really nice, i don't know why some people don't like it. i guess if your desk is under your bed it's dark and stuff. also you have to climb up to get to your bed. i'm actually going to visit a dorm next week, so i'll see.

so i just finished that questionnaire for housing thing. my choices are brownstone (french house should be pretty awesome), HoJo (own bathroom how can you beat that? and bunk beds are not that bad i guess. it could lead to some entertaining times if you need to pass out on your bed after an awesome college party!), shelton hall ( no one seems to be talking about it, but it's actually quite cute! and it has its own dining hall and you don't need to share a bathroom), the towers (i really hope i don't end up there). so yea hopefully i'll meet some of you gusy next year!

for those of you with inside college information, what should you rbing/ buy for your drom room? minifridge, microwave? rug, lamps?
