Freshman housing?

If you jump on the T its about 5 min. TA nice healthy walk is a good thing unless you have an early a.m. class then it can be brutal.

haha. jelloisgood, warren is like right next to COM. but there are better options in terms of room size and personal bathrooms just a few minutes away, so that's why you probably have read a lot about COM kids and places other than warren.

i'm currently a freshman in COM and i live at west.. at first when i was assigned it, i thought i'd be switching.. especially since they put me in a triple. but i've learned to love it here, even the triple (movable and more furniture.. and more space):
1) the west dining hall is my favorite
2) my view of nickerson field and the charles river is awesome (not all rooms have the view though.. i think it's just the odd-numbered rooms)
3) i'm a 3-minute walk from a big supermarket (shaw's) and a 5-minute walk from an asian supermarket and a bunch of asian restaurants (super88.. i'm chinese.. so it matters to me)
4) i like the west bathrooms better than the ones in warren
5) west is social enough to meet lots of people, but not as much as warren, where i would probably have less private time (even if it depends largely on YOUR choices to meet people, your dorm still has an impact on your social life.)
6) i like the communal bathrooms.. theres never been a time when all the stalls or showers were taken.. and i dont need to clean them myself. and theres no awkwardness of knock knock "hey john, you done with our private bathroom..? i reeeeally need to ****. oh.. you just took a hot shower? that's fine.. a foggy moist bathroom smelling like hot crap"
7) i'm a 2-minute walk from BU's fitrec (fitness and recreation center).. free weight room, basketball, volleyball, pool, lazy river, track, squash, etc
8) and even if the walk to most of my classes is 15-20 minutes, i enjoy it on good days

i'm sure that if i was assigned warren, i'd be talking about how i'm close to my classes, how warren is the most social, how warren hasn't had 4+ fire alarms go off unlike west, how i'm close to a 24/7 printing lab, etc.. and i'm sure if was assigned a double, i'd be talking about non-lofted beds and other things. but i learned to like what i was assigned.. enough that i'm keeping the same exact room for next year.

your dorm choice doesnt really matter THAT much. plus, don't forget you'll be assigned a roommate, who you'll have absolutely no choice over. you'll need to learn to get along with him/her as much as you'll need to adjust to your dorm assignment. so just do 20 minutes of research, pick a dorm, and get it overwith. if you really really hate both your dorm and your roommate when you get here, you can always try for a room swap. but basically none of the dorms are dungeons, and especially for freshman, none of the "freshman" dorms are THAT much better than the rest. lots of you won't get what you want anyway.. since BU wipes its ass with your housing survey.

this has probably been answered before, but i'm too lazy to search: does warren have private bathrooms or is it that the whole floor shares a bathroom?

warren has something like 18 floors and each floor has two bathrooms, on the one side there is a girls communal bathroom and on the other side of the floor there is a boys communal bathroom

hey guys,
Ive been accepted to the c general studies, and would like to know whats the 1. closest 2. better looking residence halls. I tried looking for some but the map they provide in the website is a little vague. Thanks for your help,
look forward to know you guys in september!

excluding apartments, which freshmen usually dont get, the west campus dorms (Claflin, Sleeper, Rich) are the closest to CGS.

how about the student residences? are those the ones freshman dont get? west campus residences have dinning halls computer labs? in you opinion is it a party place to be at. Can you mix both party/calmness.
thanks for ur help

hey nemo2211! i go to the international school of paris.. i think it's different from lycee international. im actually not french, but ive been living here for 7 years and love it!! so yay, i now know a french bu person!

(sorry about deviating from the housing topic.. :)

You can't live in 10 Buick St. unless you are a junior or senior, and even then you usually have to be pulled in or summer swap to get a room. West is where most CGS students I know live. It is by far the closest. Plus West has an amazing dining hall.

i think CGS also has a brownstone. so if you're interested in quiet then maybe you should consider that.

where are the brownstones? west residence halls? what are these like ? old new? what would you guys advice me to do?

i think the CGS brownstone is pretty close to CGS. it wouldn't make sense if it was really far. and west is close to CGS too. brownstone is on bay state road so it's a lot quieter than west. i've heard west has a really good dining hall. but if you're in CGS and want to meet a lot of other people maybe you should go with west.

There are no brownstones near CGS (which is on West Campus)--they are all on South Campus and the Charles River Campus (mostly on Bay State Road). The CGS brownstone is on BSR.

Most of the information everyone is looking for is on www.bu.edu/housing ...

What do you think about the commonwealth 1019 avenue residence ?

It is pretty full right now, so if you got put in 1019, you would probably be in a six person suite filled with 5 friends and you. Usually, people go in there with good friends, and I don't think people are too social outside their suites. (Don't take my word on this though. I've never lived there.) It is mostly sophomore and juniors. It is nice, though, from my understanding. It is very new, close to West Dining Hall, etc.

hey everyone. after all that i've heard about the brownstones, i have finally decided that they must be the best kind of housing out there. they are small enough where you can have a more quiet and relaxed living environment, yet large enough to have a pretty busy social life. after all, the sophomores and juniors probably know how to throw the best parties! lol. and the way i think about it, if you're only 5 freshmen per brownstone, chances are you'll all become very close! if you're worried about meeting more freshmen well there's always classes, coffee shops, dining halls.... don't take my word for it though, i am merely another confused but overly excited entering freshman, but having a perfect balance of quiet time and budding social life sounds like the best idea.

Nemo, just to warn you, Brownstones tend to be really quiet, and I'm pretty sure that no one is throwing parties in them. The sophomores and juniors throwing parties are the people who live off campus.

Just remember everyone: In all likelihood, you will end up in a freshman dorm, and that is really not that bad. One of my friends who lives in a brownstone (in a quad with three other freshman) said she thinks everyone who doesn't live in Warren has an adopted Warren Floor where they always hang out. It is really true. My friend who lives in HoJo is on my floor in Warren more than I am. Just don't sell all the housing short. Put anything you want as your first choice; I just want to make sure people aren't going to be crying if they get assigned to Warren of West. You'll love wherever you live. Believe me.

do most people not get their first choice?

It depends what your first choice is. I got mine, but it was Warren Towers (COM Specialty floor). Some people I know put Warren as their first choice and got put in brownstones. I know a lot of the freshman who end up in brownstones end up in Specialty houses because they sometimes don't fill up. It is really a bizarre process. Put down what you really want, but be open to the possibility that you may get put somewhere else completely random. Every dorm has good and bad, but just know that no where is really that bad for freshman year.
