I know that traditionally Newing and CIW have been most popular for Freshman. Is this still the case and are there certain types of students who tend to chose one over the other? Any advice would be appreciated.

If you plan on joining a fraternity or sorority, and like loud (but a social) enviornment, choose Newing. However, Newing is one of the older dorms, and is only corridor style. CIW is more social (has the best dining hall, in my opinion) and consists of triples, doubles, and 5 or 6-person suites. CIW is generally the place to be if you want a great college experience and want to be away from greek life.

idolfan - Thanks for the info! It reinforces my interest in CIW.

I also want KIS360's question answered. Does a certain type of person like any specific residence hall? And which of these are available to freshman?
CIW
Dickinson
Hinman
Hillside
Mountainview
Newing
Susquehanna

CIW- doubles, triples, and suites. This is where I would have wanted to live in. The rooms are decent size, and generally social, nice people live here. Mohawk (a building created in the late 90's) is here and is more like Mountainview, but the other 4 buildings are different to that. I'd say it is the most popular community (people want to live here the most).

Mountainview- triples and suites. These are the newest buildings by far, with air conditioning, and finished around 2003. Scholars students like it here, because they get first pick as to which residential hall they like to live in. Also, engineers like it here because there is a living/learning engineering program. (I live here so I know the most about it). Athletes also live here. These building are the highest up on a hill, so if you like to be close to everything, don't live here. They aren't GREAT for freshman, I believe, because if you don't like the people in your suite and other people like the people in their suite, you will have to make a great effort to hang out with them (what happened with me). They are more like apartment-living and the hallways are really short.

Hinman- suites. Hinman is like Mountainview (suite-style living) except it is much older and you have one bathroom versus two. It is closest to the lecture halls (where most of your classes will be) but farthest from Newing and Dickinson because they are on opposite ends. For some reasons, Asians and people who study a lot are known to live here.

Dickinson- doubles. Dickinson is most like CIW, except it is older. It is closest to the gym, so for people who like to work out, it is in a great location. It is also closest to the food court. Dickinson has smaller rooms than CIW, and people at first don't like living here, but generally learn to like it a lot because of its social environment.

Newing- doubles. Newing is where all the fraternity and sorority people live (generally, Mountainview is second I believe). If you plan on joining a fraternity or sorority, live here. If you don't like those type of people (and believe me, unfortunately with Binghamton there is a "type"), then don't live here. It is across from Dickinson and the rooms are I believe identical in size.

Susquehanna and Hillside aren't available for freshman. They are on-campus apartments.
