Freshman housing

Where do most freshman live? I heard two different stories-one said that all freshman were housed on the main campus and the other said freshman were housed on both Main campus and South campus.

Freshman are housed on both main campus and South campus as far as I'm concerned.

They are housed on both Main and South campus.

If you preferred to stay on main, there is a way to arrange that, whether through choosing a learning community or selecting the kind of room you want (open double, split double, suite, etc). My roommate and I both chose split double and lived in Brewster Hall.

What is a split double?

A Double with a wall in the middle

IlluSU-did you like living in a split double?

Are split doubles on Main campus only?

Did anyone live in a Learning/Living community?

I am currently in the Sport Management LC and I love it. It was a great choice.

Musical mom: Yes, I love it. In fact, I'm currently a sophomore and I still live in a split double. Like one of the above posters said, imagine a big room which typically would be house two roommates and split the room in half with a wall. It's not completely split in that you can still walk over to your roommates side of the room but still, split doubles give the students a sense of privacy.
Here's a virtual tour of some of the rooms available on campus. Note that it won't all look the same from building to building. Ex. Brewster/Boland's split double tend to look cleaner/newer since it was recently renovated.

On the same site, you can find out the dimensions of all the different rooms as well.

Edit: These are the different learning communities offered at SU.
Learning Communities - Which One is for Me?

Musical Mom: understand, however, that freshman cannot request a specific dorm...there is a period of time when roommates can be selected, but unless you choose a learning community, specific dorm buildings cannot be requested.

Thanks for all of your information!

My daughter is not looking to live in a specific dorm-she would like to live on Main campus. She will be a Newhouse freshman next fall and anticipates spending time in the labs and studios.

Also, do you have any recommendations about the meal plans?

can someone please explain to me exactly what a learning/iiving community is? I have heard they are bad? i will be a freshman in August 2009

ILLUSU: how can you request to be in a specific split double/double/suite? i thought you cannot request specific housing? i would like to request a suite and if this is possible when and how do i go about doing it?

Musical Mom: my D is a Newhouse freshman and took the least meals on the meal plan; she has been fine; there is also extra $$ on it that can be used when you are in Newhouse for lunch/dinner/ etc. In terms of living on main campus, that is not guaranteed for freshman; she has friends on South Campus that were initially disappointed with the placement but actually like it now, in fact, many, many sophs and juniors choose to live there...much more of a suburban feel than main campus.....

SYRACUSE: learning/living communities are based on individual interests and school....there is a link on the housing website that you can research to see if they would be a fit for you....and, no, you cannot request anything for freshman housing other than a roommate.

A fellow tour guide told me that freshmen might not be living on South Campus next year because of the new Ernie Davis hall. I took a break from giving tours recently, but apparently admissions told him to tell prospectives this.

^interesting, since Ernie Davis Hall has only 250 beds and Lawrinson is scheduled to close for renovations in the fall....not sure if that info is accurate, but thanks for the update.....

I'll double check with admissions when I get back.

i live in brewster hall and i remember being nervous about the whole thing..seeemed like 5 seconds ago, anyways i live in a split doublle and let me tell you, its best invention made to dorm rooms ever!

the best way to choose your residence hall is to pick a living/learning community. i didn't, however, and i got a great dorm. they're all really nice compared many other universities i've visited. and many are getting renovated as we speak. my dorm is being renovated next summer.

I was able to confirm that all freshmen will be living on main campus, starting next year. South Campus will be an upperclassman living opportunity.

Starting next year-do you mean Fall 2009 or Fall 2010? Thanks!
