Freshman Housing

The housing app arrived today. You have to rank your choices from 1-4. Can a current student on this board inform me which freshman dorm is the safest? Cleanest? Most spacious? And which freshman dorm to stay away from? Much appreciated. Here are the choices:

Prosser Annex
Prosser Main
Walz
Brown

My D ended up in Prosser, which generally seems to be people’s last choice. (There is virtually no difference between Prosser and the annex. They are attached to one another). As far as safety is concerned, the campus police is housed in the basement of Prosser. All the dorms use the same system with key cards to get inside. if the kids prop a door open, then anyone can gain access. Brown is all women, and many girls enjoy living there. Walz I don’t know anything about. I know Brown is highlt sought after because the rooms are spacious.
If you go to Muhlenberg’s website, and find the housing link there is more info. [Living Options on Campus](http://www.muhlenberg.edu/mgt/resserv/livingoptionsH.html)

Thank you, anothermom-w-q. Wow, your daughter came all the way from Cali? We knew Brown rooms were differently sized, not just in floor dimensions but also ceilings. Brown was the only dorm we saw during our campus visit in January. It’s a converted hospital. I’m not kidding. It was originally built as a hospital back in the 1920s. I could see why it was popular, and it’s clearly an old building. One of our tour guides (we had two) lived there. If there is a “haunted” building on campus, and if you believe in ghosts, it would be Brown. :)

Brown- all female. D had single, in a room designed as double, on the first floor, view of the soccer fields. Was so nice.

D’s in Brown in a really spacious corner triple. She likes the large rooms, ability to roam the hall half dressed, and the kind of social support network you can have in an all women’s dorm. It’s also fairly quiet. Walz is highly sought after because it has air-conditioning. Since M gives first choice to ED admits, it’s mostly filled with ED students, I think.

Walz and Prosser seem to have more active party scenes on weekends, which is a plus or minus depending on the kid.

D2 also ended up in Brown, and I think marathonman is correct; since all the ED students get first pick in dorms, RD kids rarely get their first choice.

Let me add, that, although, Walz is air-conditioned, we were able to get a doctor’s note for our daughter to have a window unit in Brown, due to her asthma. She was a popular girl at the beginning of her freshman year, when it was still hot outside!

Brown is all-girls and has big rooms. Supposedly all the girls on the floor really bond but I am really only friends with maybe three girls from my hall… Also mega negative is that I live on third floor and the stairs kill me every day. Especially when I have to go to the basement to do laundry. I personally would rather be living in Prosser Annex but most/many of the girls I know who live here actually love it. It’s pretty quiet (though the walls are not that thick- I can hear the girl next to me play awful music at all hours) and I’ve never been to a party here… but it’s great when I need to sleep early.

Walz is always full of ED kids… and IMHO it’s really cliquey and not that nice-looking. I spent a lot of time there at the beginning of the year when I was still friends with a guy who lives there and I never once thought “I wish I lived here!” also the AC doesn’t work all year round. they shut it off at some point.

Prosser is the biggest and definitely most social. It’s usually kind of loud and usually smells pretty weird (well, the boys’ side does, anyway) but actually that’s usually where I spend most of my time. Probably not the best dorm if you’re shy about walking to the showers in a towel or if you need absolute quiet to study but it’s a lot of fun. I think the rooms are also bigger than the rooms in Walz but I might be wrong.

Prosser Annex is actually really different from Prosser… they are connected to there’s still that social aspect but there are doors separating the Annex from Main, so it’s actually mostly quiet. Also there is AC in every room and it doesn’t get shut off (well, it didn’t work for a month or so after break, but we thought it might have been frozen) so you can use it all year round if you want to. And the rooms in the basement are amazing. I would have picked this over Brown if I’d gotten to see all the dorms… though I practically live there anyway so I guess it doesn’t matter.

Thanks ChellyBelly42. Excellent insider information.

I’m in Brown this fall and I have a triple comprised of a “main” room and two bedrooms… Does anyone know what this will be like?

Can you tell us about your triple in Brown ehmiwa? My daughter is considering dorms there and was really intrigued by Brown. They have a dance studio in the basement - can students use it?
She is trying to decide between Brown and Walz as her first choice. She will be a dance major.

Instead of posting a new thread, I decided to ask my question here since it is about frshman housing. Do Ed students receive the housing information before other freshmen, and if so, when do they receive it? Thanks!

You get assigned rooms based on when you get your deposit in, so the ED folks are at the front of the line. One prominent side effect was the high concentration of freshman athletes living together on my daughter’s floor. In her mind it was a good thing, but she’s an athlete and I could see it not being as attractive to others. She’s found that it really doesn’t matter all that much, and she’s been making more friends outside the team now that the season is over. For example she joined the orchestra this spring.

Thank you so much for your reply StPaulDad!
