How does housing selection work for incoming freshmen? Can you choose a dorm or list your preference(s)?

You rank your preferences and then you get assigned to a dorm. Whether or not you end up in one of your top few choices is…not necessarily certain. I got placed into my second choice, but I know plenty of people that were placed in their very last choice.

Last year, the housing form had two things on it:
- Do you have a doctor’s note for allergies?
- Do you prefer large dorms or smaller dorms?

Oh, well I stand corrected. I like the old way better.

I like the old way better too!

Which dorms would be considered smaller? Looking through them, Taliaferro and Brown look pretty small, but what other ones are on the less populous side of things?

The Botetot Complex is also considered small, as they are individual halls within the complex. Jefferson basement may be small as well, I’m not sure.

I would put the cutoff between small and large right around Monroe. Dupont and Yates are definitely large, and Botetourt, Hunt, Taliaferro, and Brown are definitely small. Where Monroe (~130) and Jefferson fit is debatable.

Jefferson is on the larger side, just short of 200, but if they’ve designated only the basement as freshman housing I don’t know how they would classify it. Probably still as a large dorm. They must be planning for a large incoming class because Jefferson wasn’t previously a freshman dorm. If I had to guess, I would say they will only house freshman students here if they are out of space elsewhere. (BTW, Jefferson is also air-conditioned.)

Monroe is definitely classified as large.

Hehehe, I derive pleasure from saying…Botetourt.

…Botetourt…Botetourt giggles

is there no longer an all girls freshman dorm?

Does the housing form really only ask two questions? No info about personal habits etc? Do they not in anyway try to match similar personalities or interest as roommates or is that a different selection form? Long way from the Davidson approach of modified Myers Briggs personality test for roommate selection.

No, I believe they did away with that last year. Two years ago, Dinwiddie was all girls. Before that, it was Hunt. I don’t think there was demand for it anymore.

Nope. They seem to have pared down the number of questions, too… when I filled it out, it asked three or four questions about music preferences, cleanliness preferences, and sleep habits. We also got to rank the dorms instead of choosing between big and small. They seemed to do a reasonable job matching roommates, but not dorm preferences. I can’t see them being able to successfully match roommates without even a few small bits of information like sleep habits…

Oh no, maybe I’m remembering incorrectly, but for some reason I thought that the housing questionnaire was different from roommate selection.

Maybe res life has more info:

The roommate survey had questions about personal habits while the housing just asked small (Botetourt, Jefferson Basement, Brown, Taliaferro) or large (Monroe, BARRETT, DuPont, Yates).

I personally think Barrett is the best freshman housing on campus but every dorm has advantages and disadvantages.

I e-mailed the help/questions service about roomate selecton for freshmen and this is the responce i got:

“We use the Freshman Roommate Questionnaire. If you have someone you’re interested in living with, both of you would have to request one another while completing the questionnaire which will be available in May.”
