Hello! I'm a to-be freshman in CoC, and I know that the schedule in CoC is pretty rigid, but I'm getting out of some classes because of AP credits. So.. I just wanted to check my planned schedule with any college CoC students in CC :)

First semester only:
Chemistry 4A
Chemistry C96
English R1B (unless I get a 5 on the AP English Literature AP)
American Cultures Requirement/Breath

...basically, I'm using my AP credits for Mathematics 1A-1B and English R1A, so I'm assuming I can take them out of my Planned Schedule list?

Also... since I'm not taking Mathematics, would anyone recommend me taking another course instead of it, or is this a good enough workload? I don't have any idea at all... And because of all my AP tests, I pretty much have my 15 unit Breadth requirement... I'm not sure what my next step would be.

Anyone in CoC out there to guide me :)? ahaha thanks so much xD

edit: Should I take Physics 7A first semester too? Also.. what are the average number of units that people take per semester? And are there a maximum number of classes one can take?

that’s good. hard work

I wouldn’t take 7A first semester, you don’t want to overwhelm yourself.

Thank you so much for the replies So should I use this schedule? I’m kind of worried that it’s not enough units (in the long run for the 120 units requirement over four years)

The first semester is a huge adjustment. It is better to take it easy. You can make up for it later, once you know how things go. If you overload yourself your first semester, you are setting yourself up for disaster.

:D cool! thanks so much. now i can finally do the planned schedule before calso;;

Newly revised schedule:

Chem 4A

Chem C96

Physics 7A

Math 53

English R1B

my only concern is that i have math 53 and physics 7a and chem 4a all together. maybe i should take out one and do breadth instead? I’m planning on doing my AC requirement over the summer

That’s an unnecessarily heavy schedule. You are probably setting yourself up for failure.

You probably should start Physics 7A in spring instead of Fall

[UC Berkeley, College of Chemistry](Chemistry & Chemical Biology Undergraduate Student Learning Goals | College of Chemistry)
at least that is what your curriculum says. Replace Physics with a breadth course.

hmm… when you say that this is a heavy load course, do you mean in general it is very hard, or is it definitely do-able? because I asked some of my former upperclassmen from my high school (a competitive public school) and they all tell me that my very first schedule was “way to lax”, especially after all that we were able to survive in our HS, and they recommended that I add Physics 7A. they’re second years and third years, so I thought that their advice would be trustworthy enough.

I think… that I will replace my Math 53 with an AC course so that I wont have to take it over the summer then. Would that be better? since AC is P/NP

upperclassman that go to berkeley? or? heavy course load as in expect no life.

^^ You’ll be fine. Chemistry 4A is something of a weeder course, so you’d better work hard at it, but neither Physics 7A nor Math 53 is hugely time-consuming. If you’re somewhat concerned, just take a peek at the Phys. 7A book and do some problems from it.

Please don’t let others persuade you that you’re going to die. I don’t know where they get that idea. Now if you had 3-4 courses that’re ALL very, very tough and time-consuming weeders, then I’d say you may die. But 7A and 53 are just standard, not especially tough. You need to work at them with consistent effort to succeed, but that’s about it.

I would, however, suggest if you can replacing an R1B with an R5B because I find they are both more easily graded + more interesting subject matter, and tend to satisfy exactly the same requirements. R5B’s, if you are not aware, are on foreign literature, translated and all.

Good luck! Let me know if you have any doubts.

oh yeah like upperclassmen from my high school that now go to berkeley

AHAHHAHAHAHHA EXPECT NO LIFE AHAHHA. ;;; okay i guess i’m glad i didnt send this in yet. my final for the moment:

Chem 4A

Chem C96 (P/NP)

English R1B

Physics 7A

AC requirement (P/NP)

and then do Math 53 over the summer next year. I think it’ll still be challenging but more do-able than my second schedule draft since the AC class is only Pass/Fail.

:) anyone want to give me thumbs up ?

edit:
Mathboy98- ah!!! thank you VERY much. extremely helpful advice you gave O_O. I hope you dont mind me asking, but are you well familiar with the CoC requirements? I was reading the CoC guide book but I am still confused whether I can substitute my R1B with R5B for the RC requirement, since in the “chem/chem bio major recommended schedule” the RC requirement is listed with English R1A/B… so i assumed that I needed to take R1A/B and couldnt sub it with R5A/B

Note – I am not in the CoC. But I’m a friendly student who has your best interests in mind! And I am rather familiar with what all the courses on your list will be like.

aha! thank you very much though -0-! I will look up whether I can sub R1B or R5B instead :D

^yes you can, you have an R&C-a and R&C-b requirements. They don’t specify what the course # is supposed to be.

ahhh lifesavers.
yeah i JUST understood it in the guidebook. wonderful!!

but I’m planning on going into pre-pharm, and pre-pharm has english prereqs. these R1/R5 courses dont count as english prereqs so it doesnt matter that im taking french lit as my RC requirement rather than english R1B… right? Only courses like English 1A will count for english prereqs? cause otherwise, i might be better off taking english R1B if it also satisfies the english course requirements for pharmacy schools

no, these courses generally count as English courses. Any R&C class covers the English requirement for health schools. Remember the plurality of Berkeley students are prehealth, if the other R&C courses did not count for health school English, no one would be taking them.

^ -0- oh mah. why are you so jedi.
So even a South Asian R5B would cover for my english prerequisite for UCSF Pharm School? This totally makes my day. I CAN FINALLY TURN IN MY PCS.

i seriously thank you helpful people so much;;
