Freshman in HS Pondering on College Selections

Good news that the green card is in process! Unfortunately, until you actually have it, you are an international applicant which is not good for financial aid purposes. Find out what the policy is in the state where you live. Some grant in-state status for admissions and state financial aid at public colleges and universities if your family has lived there for a certain amount of time and you graduate from high school in that state. That policy can vary by institution within the state as well. Don’t be afraid to ask! My local community college has been granting in-district status to “local” international students for years, but not all of the public institutions in this state have that policy.

If you have the green card by the time you apply for admission, that will make you a domestic applicant for financial aid purposes. If you get it after you have applied, you can notify the financial aid and admissions offices about your change of status. There are a couple of threads on that topic in the Financial Aid Forum. A green card is good enough. Very few scholarships are limited to citizens only.

Wishing you and your family all the best!
