Freshman in Revelle College with major in CompEng taking questions

I'm currently a Freshman at Revelle and I'm majoring in Computer Engineering(thinking about computer science). Let me know if you have any questions about revelle, my major or anything else ucsd related.

I’m in for Computer Engineering under the CSE department. I have a few questions.

Is there a major difference between “Computer Science and Engineering” and “Electrical and Computer Engineering”? I know that CSE is strictly the CSE department and that ECE is both ECE and CSE. But is there a difference in terms of the classes/material you learn? Which one are you under?

And also, have you found that you have a good amount of free time as a CE major? Or do you spend too much of your time studying?

Oh wow, this is awesome. I was admitted a CSE major but am still deciding between that and CmpEng, so I really needed this thread.

How are the GEs at Revelle, specifically HUM? I know the college requires the most but I guess my main concern is the amount of studying I’ll have to do for that sequence when I really want to focus on engineering. Also, how many years will it take to finish all the GEs if I take summer courses as well?

And, not trying to be pessimistic, how hard is it to switch colleges after the first year? (Since that seems to be the length of time you have to be in it until you can apply for a transfer.) All the admissions people would say is that nobody seems to want to change colleges.

Overall, I guess I really want to just take as many CSE and CmpEng courses as possible; keeping the impediment of GEs to a minimum is my ultimate goal.

Also, will I be able to graduate in 4 years?

How about chances for wait listed candidates getting into CS?

Andre24 - There really isn’t too much of a difference between the two departments. Early on you will take most of your classes in the CSE Departement(I have yet to take one in ECE). You don’t have to declare which of the two departments you intend to graduate from until you move on to taking upper division classes, so I wouldnt worry about it this early on. Personally I love the CSE department and I havn’t seen too much positive in the ECE department(I just get along better with the student and professors in cse). As a CE major I have spent a lot of time working, but if you take professor Ord for your first few classes and you make sure to go to the labs for the weekly homework assignments you should be fine. CS is known for being a rewarding major, but what people dont tell you is that about 50% of the students who initially declare a major in this department drop because of the workload, but i really dont think its bad. Overall i’d say the major is pretty time consuming put it is incredibly rewarding and the way the homework is set up gives you time to finish it during the week so you still have the weekends. Hope this helps

usrname - I took my first HUM class this quarter and I found it kind of hard. It was in some ways my fault though,I basically started the essays the night before they were due, mostly because I focussed a lot of my time on cs and math. But honestly the difficultly of Hum is actually really exaggerated and ontop of that it can be handled in a short amount of time(2 out of the 5 can be taken at community college). This summer I’ll probably getting rid of Hum 4 or 5(maybe both) and then I’ll just take Hum 3 in fall which means I could be done by the end of the year. My biggest advice to you regarding hum is make sure you research the teachers before you choose, some teachers are much easier than others. At times it did get annoying to have to take classes that have nothing to do with my major but then when I thought about it I realized I would hate to be stuck with all CS majors for my whole college carrer so I am actually grateful for the GEs. Regarding the CS classes, make sure you take Ord for 8A/B and your first two quarters of cs should be just fine(although it is a lot of work its easy to get an A). Trust me when I say Revelle isnt nearly as bad as everyone says. And yea I can confidently say I’ll graduate in around 4 years.

Hope this helps!

apply4college - I know a lot of people got off the waitlist last year and seeing as cse isnt impacted anymore that shouldnt have anything to do with your admittance so I’d say you have a pretty fair chance.

Which teachers did you feel were easier in HUM?

Anthony Edwards for Hum1
Chodorow or Lerer for Hum 2

Okay thanks.

I’ve been accepted into Revelle, so I’m also thankful for this information. Thank you very much gsw222!
