freshman insomnia - how to make a dorm bed comfy?

I have had good luck with playing the radio low, and I mean classical music, not hip hop. I had sleep trouble in college, too, and it helped me. Was a lot less expensive than memory foam mattresses too (which had not yet been invented).

If you want to save money and still get a good topper.

A option would be to get this topper- <a href="Overstock.com: Online Shopping - Bedding, Furniture, Electronics, Jewelry, Clothing & more.

Then get the California king size. It is only a few inches longer and twice as wide,as a twin xl. The benefit is that it is the same price as the twin xl. So it is like your getting two toppers for the price of one. I don’t have that strong of a nose, but I haven’t notice any thing as far as smell. I’ve been very happy with-it.

Just fold it in half when your putting it on the bed. Then you’ll have a two inch 3 pound density topper for 40 dollars.

They also have a 4 pound density topper for 70 dollars

^^^ sounds like an interesting idea. What kind of fitted sheets would be deep enough to accomodate such a thick topper, though? I imagine that his dorm bed sheets sets from Target would pop right off.

So far I haven’t had any problems. Right now all I have is just a simple wal-mart Twin Xl bed set. I move quite a bit when I sleep, but even with that the fitted sheet has not falling off yet

If your really worried about that being a problem. I not sure what their called…[Twin XL Mattress Fargo Select Plush - product summary - Bing Shopping](http://www.bing.com/shopping/twin-xl-mattress-fargo-select-plush/p/6788A70268AE57065020?q=twin+xl+mattress&lpf=0&lpq=twin%2Bxl%2Bmattress&FORM=EGCA&lppc=14)

The mattress is a lot thicker then the ones colleges have. I’m sure they have fitted sheets designed for these types of beds. To accommodate for the extra puffiness of the mattresses.

OP - you could always buy the mattress topper and bring it to your house to air out for 48 hours, then ship it to your son.

The toppers are compressed. Really hard to repackage after you open them up… :(

It’s hard to believe that no one has suggested this in 3+ pages of thread, and it does run somewhat counter to paying3tuitions’ well-thought-through advice, but . . . . If the mattress toppers, musical choices, and morning exercise aren’t working well enough, he might try a girlfriend.

oy vey…I’ll stay out of that part of his life and only interfere by buying and sending stuff!

Did your S ever experience sleep problems BEFORE going to college? I have never been what you would call a “good sleeper.” When I went to college, it just got much worse. Too much noise, stress, etc. I can remember tossing and turning for hours before finally falling asleep. Fast forward 32 years and it’s still rare for me to get a good night’s sleep. Now my problem isn’t falling asleep, it’s staying asleep. When I wake up during the night, I can’t fall back to sleep (sometimes for hours). I occasionally take a Benadryl pill at bedtime which almost always helps me fall asleep and stay asleep.

Oh Happy day! DS called today to say hi and how much he loves his college and the town and oh, by the way, no sleep problems for the last three or four nights, so it’s okay Mom, no need to rush on sending the mattress topper… when you get around to it that’ll be cool!

So was it the lavender, the sleep tea, the naturopathic sleep meds? I am actually doubting that he used any of that stuff I sent priority mail. He just took his sweet time to settle in and is now anxiety free (wait for midterms…) and can sleep! I will still have a mattress topper shipped to him up there. Am so relieved that I have gained back the weight I lost when he was not happy for the first two weeks! Ah, the joys of parenthood. Thanks for all your fabulous support. The parents of CC are amazing.

This is my biggest problem when I can’t sleep. I found that counting backwards from 300 by 3s really helps. It makes me concentrate enough to get my mind off of whatever thoughts were giving me anxiety and keeping me awake, yet it isn’t too stimulating.
