Hello,

I am having a difficult time deciding which math course to take. I have taken Calculus BC and received a 5 on the AP Test. Majors I am considering include Computer Science, Economics, and Business.

Might it be a good idea to avoid 1B and take 54 to fulfill the Haas math prereq and complete the required math for CS?

Please advise.

in same situation

and same potential majors

If you know the 1A and 1B stuff well (see the old final exams linked from the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/1305840-freshman-math-faq.html ), then just take 54 (or H54 if you want).

If your high school calculus course did not include any introductory differential equations material that is included in 1B, you may have to self-study that before the second half of 54.

If you can take only Math 54 and have that satisfy all of the math requirements for CS, Econ and Business (excluding stats requirements), then I’d do that, even if it takes some self-studying to round out your comfort with Math 1B material. The “Math 54 only” route will most likely be most helpful to your GPA, which is especially crucial for Haas.

^ Unless you’re confident that you can get As in all the others
