Wow thanks. Might do that.

While they won’t stop you from enrolling in Math 1A and 1B simultaneously, it may not be a good idea unless you have already know the 1A material, but need to take 1A because you do not have accepted credit (AP, IB, A-level, university/college course credit) for it.

As a freshman I want to take math 53 this fall, but I may not have my AP credits for math 1A and 1B in the system by the time I register for classes. Will this be a problem when I try to sign up, given that those are pre-reqs?

I’m confident I can handle the math 53 material (I got a 5 on both calc’s) but will I be prevented from registering?

@ ucbalumnus

I know math 1A most of Math 1B too, but don’t have credits, so I don’t think taking both courses simultaneously will be a problem.

Thanks for the confirmation =)

Others have said that TeleBears does not enforce course prerequisites (though it may enforce restrictions or priorities based on declared major, class standing, class level, etc.).

If you are concerned that the classes may be full or the sections you want may be full, note that you can take 53 and 54 in either order (and H54 usually does not fill up). However, if you take 54 or H54, you may have to self-study some differential equations material covered in 1B at Berkeley but may not be in other high school or college freshman calculus courses.

If you know the material extremely well (based on reviewing the old final exams for 1A and/or 1B), then you may want to check with your major advisor if the course requirements can be waived.

OK thanks ucbalumnus!

MCB and IB no longer accept A-Level or AP credit. Effective for Fall 2012, intended MCB/IB majors now have to take the 1A/1B or the 10 series regardless of A-Level and AP credit. I’m an intended MCB that will be going into Cal with A-Level credit, I was so happy about being waived out of Math1A/1B until 2 days ago when the emails came out :(

Have MCB and IB mentioned whether they will accept taking more advanced courses (e.g. someone who wants to double in MCB or IB and math or statistics and goes straight to 53 and 54 after skipping 1A and 1B with AP credit)?

It does seem odd that the majors that require the most math (e.g. math and engineering) are the most accepting of AP credit, while those that require just freshman calculus (e.g. business, MCB, and IB) are less accepting or not accepting at all of AP credit.

The MCB advisor replied “If you think you’re better prepared to start at Math 1B or Math 53, then we will use those courses to satisfy the major requirement.”

is math 110 (linear algebra) a good course for a serious chemical engineering major to take?

What are the math requirements for computer science major and economics major at college of letters and science. I am prospective freshman for this fall and curious about what courses to take to satisfy the requirements. (International student)

L&S CS: Math 1A, 1B, 54; CS 70, 170 are math-like courses

Economics: Math 1A, 1B or 16A, 16B; one of Statistics 20, 21, 131A, or 134. However, those going to graduate school on economics should take Math 1A, 1B, 53, 54, 104, 110 (and perhaps others) and Statistics 134 (and perhaps others).

Math 1A and/or 1B are commonly fulfilled by AP, IB HL, or A-level credit.

thank you UCBalumnus. can i fulfill math requirement by taking exam before the fall semester? I heard that in some other top school, this fulfillment is possible. I got medals from IMO and i think freshmen math is pretty easy. ( because it is fulfilled by AP) I want to spend my time at Berkeley as efficient as possible. So, i want to study more advanced things.

Is it recommended to take Math H53 without much prior experience with proofs?
Is there a mini-test on the first day to see if you qualify to take the class?

You may want to contact the math department and the departments of your possible majors if you want to use tests other than those listed on their web sites to fulfill math course requirements.

You may want to ask the math department or the course instructor.

i’m trying to register for either math53 or math54 during the adjustment period. however, the lectures that fit with my schedule currently have no open DISCUSSION times. there are, however, spots available in the class. will they open more discussion times, will everyone get into the math class if they talk to the professor?

Molecular and Cell Biology now appears to have conflicting information regarding using AP calculus to satisfy its math requirement:

[url=http://mcb.berkeley.edu/undergrad/major/major/ld-requirements/]Lower Division Requirements/url
[url=New Freshmen Q&A | Molecular and Cell Biology]2012 Freshmen/url

Prospective Molecular and Cell Biology majors should contact the department for clarification. Based on #29, the latter is probably the correct one, but #31 indicates that more advanced math courses can be used instead.

I’m already done with math 53 equivalent, but I’m not sure about 54. I’m currently taking a differential equations course regarding different techniques for solving DEs. Next quarter I’m gunna take Linear Algebra. Do you guys think this will cover math 54, and will allow me to move on to higher level math courses as a freshman?
