What course were you placed in as a freshman in math? Trig, geometry, alegebra 2, precalculus...? Please respond!

I think the majority of freshmen are placed in Geometry or Algebra 2.

Actually I think it is related to the curriculum at any particular school.

It is, but most incoming freshmen took Algebra 1 or Geometry in eighth grade, I think. (Please correct me if I'm wrong)

I think most freshmen take geometry :]

i took geometry as a freshman,
but i was in advanced...
the majority of my freshman class was taking algebra 1

Freshman math really varies from school to school
At my son #1's school, the "honors" level students complete Algebra I by 8th grade, then do Geometry in 9th with Algebra 2 in 10th
Son#2's school does Algebra 1 by the end of 8th, then Algebra II and followed by Geometry in 10th

Some students dom complete Algebra 1 in 9th grade and then move on from there

It really depends where you are from. Believe it or not, there are still plenty of middle schools that do not teach Algebra I. Ours just started two years ago.

Hi does anyone know for Exeter? I'm really worried since it seems like everyone's in Algebra 2 and I'm not sure if I'll even get into Geometry. >.< Is it possible that even if I took Algebra 1 in 8th grade and passed with flying colors that they'll still keep me in algebra 1 in 9th grade? Because I didn't do too well with my placement test...

I don't know about Exeter, but I thought placement tests were meant to identify whether you should be in "advanced" or "regular" for the class...

i hope so sportgirl,
i tired so hard to get a "perfect score" on my geometry placement test because i REALLY didnt want to be put back in geometry, even though i dont think they would do that to me...
i really wanted honors though =)

Ballerina:

I doubt you'll be put back in Geometry if you've already taken it. That would be ridiculous. You want to be in honors Algebra 2 or honors Trig? (I think either one goes after Geometry, depending on the school.) I'm sure you did fine on the test. Also, usually, your grades and prior class levels are looked at as well, and if you were in advanced geometry your Freshman year (I think you mentioned that in a post), I'm sure that will be taken into account. Worst comes to worst, you're put in regular, and that can still be temporary. Even if you're put in regular level Algebra 2/Trig, I'm pretty sure you can still be moved up. For example, if you're getting As and A+'s on every exam, it's obvious you should be moved up to "advanced."

Most ninth graders take Algebra I. I was in advanced math for all of middle school, and have done most of Algebra I and some of Geometry, but because my school did hybrid math, I didn't get all of Algebra I (there were some very insignificant things that I didn't know), and so my BS wouldn't let me take Geometry. It's unfortunate, but math isn't a priority for me so I'm not bugged that much.

At Andover, the majority of 9th graders take Math 210, or Geometry.
One, much smaller group, takes Math 100, or Algebra I. Another group, of similar size to Math 100, takes the two-term course Math 150, for students with some Algebra I skills, and a third group, also the roughly the same size, takes Math 190, a one-term Algebra review course.
Then a couple kids (not very many, under two dozen at least this year) go into Math 320 (Algebra II) or various levels of Math 330, 340, 350, and 360 (all precalculus). A very small number go into Math 600, or AP BC Calculus. This year, one went into Math 650, which is something beyond calculus, I can't remember which course it is.
That was our breakdown, anyway. So, basically, geometry is, by a large amount, the typical course.

Wherever I go to school for 9th grade, I'm taking Geometry Honors.

you have to be placed in honors first mdog.

Good point lol, my bad. But, if I stay at my old school, I'm in Geometry Honors 100%

Deerfield insisted that our son take a math placement exam, and he placed out of algebra I into geometry. We were encouraging him to retake algebra (relatively underachieving as a B student with high math SSAT scores), but the math department chair made the decision for him. Suggest you take math placement test.

I took Geometry greshman year, although the majority of the students at my local high school take Algebra I and a few (if I had moved in into the district earlier I would have been with them) take Algebra II.

In my school the regular freshman took a class called Algebra/Geometry 1 which was a combination of the first half of Algebra 1 and Geometry. I took that in 8th grade, and freshman year I took Algebra/Geometry 2 which was the second half of both of those, and then a class called FAATS which was equivalent to Algebra 2. Math rocks :-D
