Freshman Move In Day Questions?

Well its just 2 weeks before freshman move in. Anybody have any questions regarding it? I would recommend trying to get there by 7:45 am if you want to avoid later craziness with traffic. I also would recommend that once everything has been moved in I also would recommend that parent(s)/family leave so that students can begin to meet and socialize with one another. I know it can be tough to do so but it probably is in the best interests of the students to do so.

I was just wondering if most kids have some type of lock box or safe for their valuables?

The rooms do not have any type of built-in safes or lock boxes like hotels do. You can purchase a lock for your computer. I would not recommend bringing any really expensive jewelry or similar items. I guess you could bring a small personal safe or some other type of lockable briefcase/furniture but the space is very limited in most of the dorm rooms.

not everyone can be there at 745 as there are assigned times. The earliest my D can move in is noon. For anything valuable, just make sure you lock your room and keep valuables out of sight until you know someone well… A few yr back, My son had a $100 portable HD stolen within the first two weeks. He thinks he knew who did it but no proof. Someone was in their room visiting and he left it on the desk. Easy to steal. Get insurance for your valuables. I know we can’t get renters being in a dorm but a rider or personal property insurance. we will do this for D HD and laptop.

If you have small safe box it can be carried off. When my son lived in a house, we gave him a small file cabinet that had a lock on it. It is much more obvious if someone was carrying that off (esp in a dorm)

yes check with your homeowners policy… we have state farm and our students belongings were automatically included as part of our policy but each policy is different and depending on your coverage you may need to pay a little extra but usually close to nothing. My D back in 2012 brought a laptop lock but she didn’t use it all the time once she was settled in…however she was careful to always lock her room when not in it… Luckily her room mate did the same.
