Freshman Move-In Tips

Cannot believe its finally coming, but we are moving my daughter to Sleeper Hall on West Campus next weekend. Would love any Move-In tips from seasoned veterans! As we are flying in from Chicago, we have hired a friend to drive us around to pick up all the various things we have ordered or stored in the city to avoid parking issues. I am assuming we will be making trips out to a variety of stores once we get settled. Thanks!

Congrats! :-) Usually people need to make stops to the BU bookstore to pick up their books, CVS to get toiletries that they forgot or just need to stock up on (there's one near the east dorms and one near the west dorms, both on Commonwealth ave), possibly radio shack if you find you need a longer ethernet or cable cord, and usually out to dinner to finish off the day!

Also, (now this may just be my own opinion and others may have a completely opposite view), but avoid helping your daughter unpack ALL of her things. I mean sure, help her set up the heavy stuff and maybe put stuff together if there's stuff that needs to be put together, but decorating the room, putting up the photos from senior year...that stuff (I find) is personal and is kind of a letting go thing. It normally takes a while to put things away and two or more people helping can get kind of crowded.

Again, that's just my opinion, maybe some other students could give their view, I've just always wanted to spend the time hanging out with my parents, there's plenty of time to unpack later.

As for books, if you know the ISBN # then you can check half.com to see if you can save some $$. You can return books to B&N.

She should have a fan because Sleeper is hot for the first few weeks.

Best places to stock fridge are the huge Shaw's and the Super 88 market (which is Asian). Both are near West.

There are about 10 million places to eat in the area. If you want the feel of the immediate area around West, Angora Cafe across Comm Ave has great ice cream (and sandwiches) and is next to Grille Zone, which has the best hamburgers, and T. Anthony's, which is a BU institution. Brown Sugar is a very good Thai place. The Super 88 food court has terrific food - Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, also Indonesian, dim sum and a good Taiwanese place that's not yet open. If you want someplace a little nicer, then Eastern Standard and Petit Robert in Kenmore are both very good and reasonably priced.

hopefully you can move in a little bit earlier because, trust me, moving in with the rest of the freshman is awful on the big days. its impossible to get an elevator, so try to do as few trips as possible up and down. i once waited 45 minutes for an elevator in warren when moving in (you have to be able to fit the cart in and every time the elevator cam there was already a cart inside of it). but yes to lergnom, the heat will be excruciating til mid october or so: a fan is a must!

Thanks for the great info so far! Have moved older daughter into college for several years, but so much simpler with non-city environment and the ability to pull a few SUVs up to the front door! Does anyone happen to know if we can move in late Friday afternoon? I know you can move in early, but we did not get any info on the hours that is possible for "checking-in", elevator access, keys, etc.

You can check in any time between 10am and 4pm.

the info about that should be either on the studentlink where you registered to move in early or on the office of housing website http://www.bu.edu/housing/living/moving/basics.html
i'm moving in early as well and the hours are 10 am to 4 pm only

You check in, get the key, a cart if you need one, and then you can physically move in more on your own schedule. The move-in time is really for checking in.

Is the "check-in" at the specific dorm or in a general Housing Building? That would be great as we will arrive before the 4pm deaadline, but would not be able to finish our move-in. Seems like it would be great to get a head start Friday night!

It says on the student link, but for West it will be there. The small dorms, apartments, etc. have check-ins at larger dorms but West is a large housing place.

Where does it say on the Studentlink? I'm at Shelton and can't find another building mentioned anywhere... Do we get a parking pass or do we have to find parking on our own? Oh and I never got my BU ID at Orientation (because I didn't have a license). Will I need that to check-in?

-The Unmentioned Coot66

go to your residence assignment under student link and there will be an option where u register your move-in date and it'll tell u where to check in. for warren towers, u park right in the garage underneath the dorm. for other dorms, i dont really know, they have parking lots all over campus but theres also meter parking. you'll need your driver's license definately to park in and your ID number.

the parking in warren is free during move-in day, right?

We are too late to order at half.com. but just wondering where you find the ISBN numbers before you get to campus. The listing provided through BU website/B&N does not seem to provide that as far as we can tell. We are just ordering the books (hopefully) used through B&N and will pick up when we arrive.

It doesn't. I use the Edition numbers if they are helpful from the site. If I absolutely need to ISBN, you need to contact the professor via email.

I'm living on Bay State Road and I registered my move-in ages ago and didn't pay attention to the check-in site. Does anyone know what it is?

its on the studentlink under food and shelter, and then residence assignment. then there;s an option that says "Change my move-in date?"

Yeah, mine doesn't have that option, but someone else told me its at the Towers.

If you live in the even numbered side of Bay State rd your check in is at Towers. The odd numbered side of Bay State Rd takes place at Shelton.

i believe thats incorrect, im on the even side and i check in at 575 comm ave
