Freshman Move In - Well that was easy

I didn't realize this was the 1st (or maybe 2nd?) year JMU staggered frosh move-ins over 2 days. We arrive a bit before 9:30 and could have left before noon. Plenty of upperclassmen there to help move stuff into dorms (although a folding hand truck, packing most of son's things in large rubbermaid bins and a large duffel for linens helped). No parking issues, at least for the Village dorms near lot R1. Weather cooperated, too. Room is laid out with a pair of outlets per desk, another pair over the dressers. Phone, ethernet, and TV jacks are near the door. Looked like all 3 rooms in the suite are placing their refrigerators in the common area. An upperclassmen told us when everyone arrived on one day, it was very crazy.

Adhoc activities start this evening, but we left after lunch. Formal orientation starts tomorrow.

If you're arriving Wednesday, some suggestions - DO NOT GO TO WAL-MART (jammed). Home Depot looked a little saner (from the outside at least). Ikenberry, at least, seems large enough that lofting the beds is not essential, although elevating (what s is doing) creates a lot of storage space under the bed. A desk credenza or some form of over-desk shelving seems almost essential (will either ship, send instructions to make, or bring on/before Family Weekend), and I saw some creative use of boards and clamps to create a headboard shelf or mount for a lamp.

Oh, Texas Roadhouse and Outback don't open until 4:00 or so. (:

Wow, thanks for the info. D just graduated from JMU and freshman move-in for her and us was stressful. S is a high school senior going to apply to JMU. Now I won't dread orientation move-in if he decides to go there. By the way, just out of curiosity, do you know which dorm is the honors housing dorm this year?

No idea on which dorm is honors - maybe I can find out from my s. I'm wondering if one reason it went smoothly for us is that we arrived almost as early as possible, weren't too badly over packed, and he had his stuff organized for easily carrying inside. Some of the students (esp. the girls) looked like they had either emptied their room into a large collection of shopping bags, emptied the local mall into shopping bags, or both!

To Future: I believe the Honors Dorm this year is Hoffman. I understand it is newly renovated.
We had the same experience with Move In yesterday in the village. It was seamless with lots of help, even with the dorm refrigerator.
There is a 2nd Wal-Mart in Harrisonburg on North Route 42 (parallel to Route 11). Wish we had made chosen to go there because we ran into the crowds at Wal-Mart and they didn't carry the 25 ft. ethernet cord we needed. We had to go to Staples.
Have a good year!!

We, too, were pleasantly surprised at the relatively easy freshmen move-in on Wednesday. We arrived around 9:15 (son's idea) and spent about 5 minutes unloading our truck and 15 minutes moving everything to the 6th floor of his dorm. Not a problem at all and lots of helpers around. We are glad we went early since we were done getting him settled by 10:15 but even when we left campus around 1:00 move-in still looked to be going smoothly. I don't know how many years JMU has staggered their freshmen move-in but it gets an A+ in my book! I hope the upperclassmen returning to campus on Saturday have a smooth move-in as well. Good luck!

Yes, kudos to JMU on the move in! Moved D into Potomac Hall (beautiful dorm) and the car was unloaded in 3 minutes flat by "the team." I couldn't believe how smoothly it went. I didn't lift or carry a single thing. We picked up her books from the bookstore and made sure everything was in order with her bank account - had a great lunch and then I cried for 2 hours on the way home. I am shopping for a desk hutch now to take to her - should have just ordered one through the school.

if you have any luck getting the desk hutch, could you post where you got it here, I also should have ordered one.

I still have the pile of advertisements sent through JMU. It is from CollegeSavers.com. It's a company from Blacksburg VA. Cost is 59.95 for standard and $62.95 for large,-accommodates desktop computer. Please post what you find out about delivery.

I have a message into that company to see whether they have hutches left for delivery. She would have to figure out a way to get it to the dorm, but I need to take winter clothes at some point anyway so maybe I could pick it up. I'll let you know if they still have any.

Spoke to CollegeSavers this morning and ordered a desk hutch. They are still delivering to the school. They will make an attempt to deliver right to the student, but if they can't catch them, they deliver to the post office on campus. They have a delivery going tomorrow but not sure how much room there is. I doubt they'll catch D in her room - she spends the entire day tomorrow on the other side of campus, so she'll probably ask a friend to help her pick it up. $25 delivery fee but the total is still less than $100 and the others I've looked at often don't have room for the printer under them on the desk.

Thanks for the info on the desk hutch. I don't think I can order from College Savers though, my son is on crutches, and I don't think he can manage to carry it at all. I am looking for one to get shipped to my house in NY and I will bring it on family weekend. I will contact college savers, maybe they will ship one and I can pick it up family weekend.

I'm sure they will do that. My D is getting a friend to help her pick hers up this afternoon or tomorrow. The post office told her they would hold it for pickup for 21 days so you should coordinate deliver with CollegeSavers. If you know for sure your S can be available when they deliver, they will deliver it to him.

Can I just add how great JMU has been regarding my son being on crutches. They have a ride service which takes him to his classes and also to PT in town. It was rough, the first day, with the ride schedule, but now it is going well. So far, I love!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!JMU. All the staff, nurse, and everyone we have contacted has given 110% for us, and being from NY, we are not used to this kind of response. So far, I am sure JMU is a place where you are not just one of the numbers, and I am sure my son is where he should be.
