Do parents typically move the kids in and then leave immediately at Michigan? I ask because at my older daughters school parents stay through convocation and then go. Michigan is saying move in doesn’t begin until Friday this year unless you are connected to some special group ( last year it was a Thursday). We are trying to plan work schedules and can make adjustments but wondering what was typical if anyone has experience.
Most drop off and go…the kids want to explore and the school has things for them to do socially those few days before class…staying would only interfere here…(IMHO)…
I have no desire to stay unless it’s what is expected and planned for. I know that at many schools it is programmed for and expected that parents stay thru convocations. Those schools include U of C, Wash U and Duke ( and U of M-Flint) all of which have parent programing tied into convocation. It seems like your answer was that U Mich does not have such a program.
Ok I decided to call and ask. And they said that parents are invited to and “the majority” stay through convocation. They also said that freshman will be moving in on the 4th (a Friday)
My older son goes to Wash U and they do have a wonderful parents move in program and we went to convocation. When we moved my younger son into Michigan we felt bad we didn’t stay for the convocation but he was in honors and moved in on Wednesday and convocation was not until Friday night (if I remember correctly) with no events for us in between. The difference I see is that Michigan invites parents to orientation whereas the students go to that alone at Wash U. So all we did at the Wash U program during move in week was covered at the parent sessions of orientation at Michigan.
When I dropped off my D last year, I did not stay. I would have guessed most parents did not - none of my D’s three suite mates had parents that stayed either.
