Freshman on-campus housing requirement?

My daughter will be attending OU full-time in the fall. In one of the information booklets (printed a while back) it stated that freshman students MUST live on-campus in the dorms. This is rather disconcerting, since my family has lived in Norman, not far from campus, for almost all of my daughter’s life. I’ve heard rumors that this policy has since been changed. Anyone know for sure?

“All single freshman students under 20 years of age must live in a university residence hall for the academic year EXCEPT for those who have earned 24 or more hours of college credit in residence or have already lived in university residence halls for two semesters. Exception from this policy is by special permission only, granted in writing by the Vice President for Student Affairs or his/her delegate(s). Application for exemption must be made to the Housing and Food Services Office, Room 126, Walker Center.”

Your daughter should not have an issue getting an exemption. A large number of freshmen, mostly from the Norman/ Moore/ South OKC area commute from home. @allyphoe provided a link to the Residence Halls Housing Policy which indicates that students who live in Norman can be exempt.

According to OU’s common data set, approximately 12% of freshmen commute.
