Hi guys I am really confused about something. I am starting my 1st year in a university in the UK like a normal student. However, I want to apply in the US (top unis) and the thing is I do not care about missing a year. I want to apply like any other highschooler and start 1st year in the US next year. Can this be done, or am I necessarily seen as a transfer student. I really want to have a choice over it cause transfer statistics are not the most encouraging. Princeton does not even accept transfers. (Obviously I am doing SATs and filling the essays etc)
SOoo am I freshman or transfer?
P.S Pardon my ignorance on the matter. Do not want to sound like a foul but I am really baffled over this

It depends on the school, the definition of a transfer ranges from:

Taking 1 post-HS college class (eg. GWU).

to

A year of post-HS full time college (as determined by the college; eg. Yale).

And anywhere in between.

Have you actually started those classes in the UK? If not, why don’t you just take a Gap Year, get a part-time job, and work on the applications to the US colleges/universities that interest you? That way you would clearly be a Freshman applicant.

so i.e harvard says that to be eligible for transfer one must have completed 1 year of college. since i will not, am i eligible to apply as a regular freshman?
thanks :)

Yes, from the H website:

[Harvard College Admissions § Applying: Transfer Program](http://www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/apply/transfer/eligibility.html)

^Before you get too excited, check the transfer definitions of other schools you’re interested in, they may be much more restrictive. And remember what the likelihood is of you being accepted as an Intl. applicant for one of ca. 20 spots.

Thanks for the info. much appreciated.
obviously i am realistic. there is no need to emphasize the obvious antagonism for acceptances in such schools.
however, how will i rly know if i dont do it? and that goes for all aspects of life. Once more thanks for the info

btw can i hide i am going to college and just apply regularly to all unis as a freshman?

In theory. But you’ll be denied or expelled if they find out you lied, so you probably shouldn’t.

Sure, you can always lie about anything.

Oh, I see, you want me to tell you if you can lie and get away with it.

Feeling really bad about helping at all right now, so I think I’ll withhold some relevant information :).

Good luck and good-bye.

hah… interesting. thanks u guys.
i rly dont want to sound insensible or anything but would there be a possibility that entomom you could pm me any relevant info that could help me? in any case thanks for the advice you have given me
cheers
