Hello.
I have been taking part time classes just under two years. Can I apply as a freshman? I do not want to transfer my classes over.
How many units do you have? You are a transfer student and there is a clearinghouse that has a record of your college courses so you cannot hide that you did not attend any college. It will depend upon the college, but you do not have a choice if they courses are transferable or not.
If you attended a college regardless if you were part-time or not, you have some college credits. How many credits do you have? Each school will have different criteria, so it will depend upon the # of credits you have to determine if you can apply as a Freshman or Transfer. Mostly likely you are a transfer. You will still have to submit your college transcript to any school where you will apply, so there is no choice if you do not want to transfer the credits. It will be up to the new college you are applying to whom will decide was transferable or not.
Are you saying you have been taking college classes since you graduated from high school? You can’t apply as a transfer student unless you have been in a full time program for at least a year per Harvard’s admissions website. Here is that page:
I don’t see anything that says it is okay to have taken college classes for credit post-graduation and you can still apply as a freshman, either. Maybe someone else can provide information or a link to the specifics on that, but you pretty clearly can’t apply as a transfer. But many colleges also would not allow you to apply as a freshman, either – just can’t find a definitive statement on their website.
You asked this over in the Harvard forum, too. Every college has their own rules on this and they do vary. You have to read their admissions website, and contact admissions for the college if it is not clear.
Freshman Fall 2016 Admit Rate: 4.8%
Transfer Fall 2016 Admit Rate: 2.1%
Students who have enrolled either full-time or as a degree-seeking student after graduating from high school must apply for transfer admission.
Transfer credit is reviewed and awarded by Stanford’s Office of the University Registrar according to Faculty Senate policy. While Stanford has no articulation agreements with any college or institution, a course generally receives transfer credit if it meets the following conditions:
It is completed at an accredited institution
It is substantially similar to courses offered at Stanford
It is completed with a grade of C- or better
It does not duplicate, overlap or regress previous coursework
Actually it’s the fifth time you’re asking this. That’s a terms of service violation, you know.

I posted on many threads because i thought i would reach different groups. It will not happen again.
I asked this question hypothetically. I started a marketing/branding business after highschool instead of going to college. I wanted real world experience before making a large decision. Now im ready to go to school.
I did great in highschool. Id love to attend an ivy or top private school. But i dont feel qualified and want to build up more As and basic skill. Ex: id rather apply knowing calc 3 instead of pre calc. So i figured id apply as a freshman with some college under my belt. Im not looking to transfer the credits, but start with higher classes so i finish with higher level classes.
So far good advice.
You have to submit all of your college transcripts. Period.
Whether you need to apply as a freshman or as a transfer depends on each college/university’s policy. Check their websites.
The places that accept you will let you know whether any of your courses have transferred and as what. You may find that none transfer at all. You may find that they transfer as a certain number of credits in a particular subject but don’t replace any specific course(s). You may find that they are used to replace specific courses offered at that college/university. This is determined by institutional policy, and you have very little influence over the results. Two cases when you may find that your input is needed or useful are:
- You are admitted with more credits than their policies allow you to transfer. Meet with your advisor in order to determine which specific courses should be transferred so that you can optimize your use of your credits.
- You want credit or advanced placement for a particular course. Bring the syllabus, textbook(s) and any graded homework for that class so that you can petition for the credit/placement that you want.
