I was accepted into UCF and the Burnett Honors College. I have already sent the $200 deposit and am waiting for Burnett to send the paper to reserve my seat. However, before Burnett can finalize my reservation, I need to have signed up for the Freshman Orientation. I will be doing this when the info comes out, but I'm wondering...I was told that during Freshman Orientation, I will already sign up for my classes, etc. But will I be able to sign up for Honors classes then and talk to an Honors Adviser? What will be the purpose of the Honors Orientation then?

I’m in the same position as you, so I haven’t actually attended a regular freshman or honors orientation; however, I am under the impression that they will have honors advisers there. This said, I am not sure how in depth the advising will be, but you’ll definitely be able to sign up for your honors classes when deciding your schedule at orientation. The big benefit of going on the day sanctioned for honors kids is that it’s one of the first, if not the first, orientation day so you’ll have your pick of the classes you want without worrying about trying to get into a class that is already filled up by other incoming freshmen. I’m sure there are other “special” aspects of the honors orientation as well, but we’ll just have to wait to see what they are on orientation day.

Then again honors college students (and most well qualified applicants), will already have AP credit for the huge auditorium classes, making early registration a little less important. i.e. the classes you will try to sign up for won’t be in as high demand as others

Yes, it’s also ironic that the classes that will fill up the fastest will be the honors classes themselves since they have the class limit and all the honors kids will be picking classes at the same time even if it is earlier than everyone else. In that sense, you don’t want to be the honors kid who goes to the very last orientation only to find that all the honors and even regular classes are already filled up. Personally, I will be going to the honors orientation so I can do everything in my power to make the transition to college as smooth as possible.

Im just hoping to get in haha. I procrastinated with my app so I guess I’ll reap what I’ve sown… weren’t you considering the EXCEL program as well? Im thinking of joining

Yeah I’m going to do the excel program if they’ll ever get back to me lol, apparently with the excel program I have an extra good chance of getting in since I’m a Hispanic female and that’s a rarity in the stem fields as opposed to the white males but I’m a little weary of the math placement test

I heard the test is only exceeded in difficulty by it’s monotony. But the kids I know who took it were lazy haha. Yeah it seems like a useful program, all math and science help

Yes, I was considering EXCEL but a UCF advisor I spoke with told me Burnett > EXCEL, so I shouldn’t worry about it if I get accepted into Burnett.

I guess we will see when the time comes for the orientations. I’m only missing about 4 classes of GEP, so hopefully the ones I need to take in my first semester won’t get filled up too quickly. Then again, I’m going to try to attend to orientation ASAP.

I took a practice MPT yesterday. It wasn’t hard, but the questions were worded weirdly so you really have to be careful about how you answer. And apparently you can’t pause the practice test, so be ready to sit and do math for the next 3 hours once you start.

Good luck to everyone who is still waiting for a reply!

I gotcha, Burnett is definately better but if I’m denied then a back up plan is in order. Joy for math!

Yeah, it’s good to have EXCEL as a backup plan in case things don’t go well with Burnett.

How long is the orientation? I’m hearing all kinds of different times. I heard from 9am-9pm, then I heard from 9am-3pm, then I heard it was two days?? Also, when is the earliest time to do the orientation? Can you do it any day of the week? I want to get it over with.

The first day is 8 AM to 8 PM. Next day is 8 AM to 4 PM (approx).

There are scheduled dates that you can pick from, but honors orientation is generally the first set of dates and there is only 1.

The honors orientation option isnt showing up online for me, is anyone else having that issue?

I was planning on doing Burnett and Excel, paid research sounds worth it.

Amarinello7: It’s not showing up for me either, I emailed the Orientation staff but I wouldn’t expect to hear a reply or change until Monday.

Anyone who already applied for EXCEL should check their status online. I got rejected but I’m very excited about being a part of Burnett Honors.

Demure - Okay. Let me know when you hear back! :)

Don’t you have to wait for the student reply form to be mailed back to them to register for honors orientation?

I got an email from UCF today telling me that their records show that I was accepted to Burnett Honors so they made that date available on the orientation sign-up and I was able to sucessfully sign up for it. If anyone doesn’t see the Honors date available, you should email the orientation staff ASAP.
