Freshman Orientation?

I live on the east coast and seems kinda nuts to fly out to santa barbara for a two day orientation.... how much longer after orientation do freshman move in? Is it worth it to go?

I thought we only moved in september…

ya thats what I thought and orientation happens on a bunch of dates in late july and early august

[Freshman Orientation Session Dates](http://www.sa.ucsb.edu/orientation/FreshmanOrientation/FreshmanOrientationSessionDates.aspx)

Its wicked far for me… im not sure if it worth it to travel 6000 miles there and back to visit for two days

If you don’t go, you won’t be able to register for classes until you move in. Many courses you might want could be full – that’s the main purpose of orientation; it’s not just to visit.

Obviously but is a 6 hour flight really worth it? I mean it’s only the first quarter of your freshman year so my guess is you won’t be missing out on a lot.

yea also does anyone know if the whole program is worth it. I mean orientation is REALLY expensive, over $300 dollars for two days!? Are those tickets gold plated or something :O

Could be useful BUT I cannot see anything there that I will not have an opportunity to do in September. Plus, you’ll miss out on ‘HOLY S**T! WHERE DO I GO AND WHAT DO I DO?!’ week ;-)

From Orientation website:
What is UCSB Freshman Orientation?
Freshman Orientation is a two-day visit to UCSB where you will have the opportunity to:
Receive extensive academic advising in small groups
Register early for fall classes appropriate for your first quarter
Learn about the academic environment and undergraduate research
Meet other new students and make friends
Experience residence hall living
Explore ways to get involved in campus activities
Meet UCSB faculty, staff, and administrators
Discuss important first-year college issues
Learn about campus life from current UCSB students
Get all of your questions answered about coming to campus
Learn your way around UCSB

So no. My thought is that an opportunity to register for classes early is not worth 300$. It’s just another way to make extra money for the troubled budget.

Dude, I simply reside in NorCal (about a 3-5 hour drive down to UCSB) and I’m not even going to Orientation. The only thing I see good about Orientation is you get to sign up for your classes before everyone else (but since I’m in the Honors program, I really don’t have that problem). Even if you haven’t seen the campus yet, it’s quite a fly, and quite expensive.

I would say don’t worry about Orientation. You have four days to self-orient yourself before instruction actually begins, so don’t trip too much.
