I can't go since I'm off to Vacation for a week.

its not that important....at least not at my school

Orientation at my school:

They give you your schedule (you'll get it once you come to school anyway), you meet your teachers, and, if you want, you can buy a class t-shirt and a yearbook

Hmm... At my school it was a good idea. i found where all my classes were, met some people (didn't know anyone except for the other 19 people that applied, got accepted and wanted to go), and got free ice cream. Other then that it was kinda boring and since I didn't really know anyone it was a little weird. We didn't have a real big lecture or anything because we had already had a tour of the school and met with the guidance department.

Since you can't go you will have to deal with it! Talk to the school and maybe they can help you!

Won't you have to change your username since you will now be "9thgradeboy" ? What do you even do during orientation? I always miss those things.

Not important.

I suggest going to it if you can. It's a good chance to meet people and find out where your classes are.

I though that "Freshman orientation" would be something totallt different, what a relief!

not important at all.

It was important for me, especially since my school was the most confusing to get around in WA state...Good to know where classes are, don't want to be tardy the first day.

It depends on the school. Our freshman orientation was pretty much useless, but we had no one new to meet (only one middle school in town) and no one could possibly learn in one afternoon how to get around our highschool. (I think it was designed under the influence of something heavy.)
If your school's orientation is more useful, or if more than one jr. high/middle school empties into the HS, then you might be missing more, but you'll catch up in no time nonetheless.

Not important.

keep this in mind:

everything you do in high school is useless except your classes and sports. student council and honors societies are a waste of time.

be cynical in HS. it will help you out bigtime.

It doesn't matter at all. The whole point is really just to see your new classmates and teachers. My school gave out free stuff at the orientation though.

If you go to a big school it's probably nice because you can get a feel for where your classes are before 1000+ other people are thrown in there. At my school, we're so small it was almost pointless (then again, I'm a teachers kid & have been running around that place for a while, so to me it would be pointless!). If you still wanna tour the building, call the school & see if you can go there sometime just you & a parent, I'm sure the secretaries are already there working & they could suggest a day to come.

the past 2 years we have done something called Link Crew... I believe other schools do this but I'm not sure

It's a four hour long thing that freshmen must go to to get their schedule (or wait).

there were 85 of us for 900 (split over 2 days) freshmen.
We all went into groups of 10 or so and did "games", campus tour, ask any questions to STUDENTS (us...)... There were the Punks who were too cool for school, but overall, i think that the freshmen who were open to the idea realllly benefited.

at least... my groups did. But we were the fun group. Somehow me and 3 of the cheerleaders ended up with 10 kids and we were just messing around having fun... while still doing all the activities and getting the message across, surprisingly

its up to you. Depends on if its (like when MY "orientation" was) where you just pick up clothes and a sched, or you can actually interact

I so agree.

Some clubs speak, the upperclass counselors sayy hi to you, some teachers say hi, you go class to class.

It's more important for the parents, really IMHO.

I'm going to go to mine even thougth it's going to be boring. You get detentions for being late so i want to know my classes.

I disagree with that. Unless by sports you also mean non-athletic competitive teams, which aren't sports (band, robotics teams, chess clubs, debate team), you're discounting a large group of activities that--aside from being fun--make a statement to colleges, just as sports do.

That said, any club you go to for fun is good and has a purpose. High school is more than a list of activities to hand to a college. It's also part of your life.
