Freshman Orientation

hey i had a question about the freshman orientation
what goes on during the orientation and how long is it?
anyone flying to LA? and if so.. are there any discounts for students?

if you live instate, www.southwest.com has some great offers...check their special deals sections
Right now $49 one way with 14 day advanced purchase

wow so much went on during freshmen orientation that i don't even remember it all, but ill attempt to list as much as i remember:

get a taste of dorm life so you know what to bring in fall and what to expect

meet new people and make new friends

plan your courses/ choose your 1st quarter classes!!!

take some placement exams if any

find out requirements and stuff for your major

find out how many units you've transferred

get intro info to some majors... some departments also have open house

get questions answered by counselors

presentation on diversity

presentation on academic dishonesty

carpe noctum activity (scavenger hunt)

campus tour

club recruitment

counselors put on talent show (it was pretty good lol)

get general info on college-related stuff and ucla-related stuff (i.e. where resources are, what you use your bruincard for, other rules and regulationsetc etc.)

you will probably end up in a group with people from your major or similar majors, and your counselor is probably a student who's in that major. the counselors are nice, well-trained, helpful, and pretty active themselves on campus.

i also highly recommend you go to the earliest orientation possible!!! sure classes are available at later orientations, but they might not be your first choice ones!!!

it's a total of 3 days, 2 nights.

here's the ucla orientation website (it hasnt been updated for 2005 summer though):
http://www.orientation.ucla.edu/

So you can choose the date you want your orientation to be?

yea you choose the date you want your orientation to be. i recommend as early as possible simply to get the classes that you want.

does anyone know when we signup for orientation and when the earliest dates for orientation are gonna be?

j3ff, its way too early haha. people haven't even turned their SIRs in yet! but anyway, i remember last year, orientation info came around early june and we were able to signup for it around the 2nd week of june. they'll mail you more info and also about when the specific dates are (throughout july and august)

kfc4u: I will be able on a trip in late June through late July. Is there still orientation in early June or August. I don't want to be screwed over with classes.

are we talking about the actual freshman orientation? or the preview week thing

actual freshmen orientation.

Eiffelguy, sign up for the closest orientation to when you come back in late July. You probably won't have any trouble signing up for classes. They run all the way through late august so don't worry about that, but there are no orientations before late June when you are leaving.

Thank you Brandnew for answering my question. Whew! One stress reliever gone....but I've returned to the undecided again. I though I wa going to UCLA for sure I got rejected from Stanford, but I got a great deal from Georgetown...dang.

good luck with your decision eiffelguy! Congrats on Georgetown. wait, stanford decisions are up? what do you want to study bytheway?

stanford doesn't do online decisions... i think they mail out on the 31st for regular decision.

Yeah, Stanford mails out on the 31st. I meant to say if I was rejected from Stanford, then I would go to UCLA...

boo stanford for being the only one to not have an online admission system.

anyways orientation isnt the campus visiting stuff during April (depends on the UC, and whatnot) right? I got a little bit scared cuz I got a lot of mail from the UC campuses and each had their own days of admittance visit. I thought that these days were the earliest freshmen orientation days.

Speaking of which, is anyone making a long distance journey to visit these campuses on admittance days? I live in Bay Area so I'm not gonna skip a whole weekend to visit UCSD or UCLA (or UCD for that matter). I imagine if u live close to the UC, then that would not be a problem.

yeah... i'm from the bay area too. if i do end up going to ucla, which is very likely, ima try to go the earliest orientation possible. it's not too far... i guess so cal doesn't seem far for me since i visit relatives there a lot
