I just got my 1st semester grades, I got all A's= 4.0. I worked my butt off for those grades but my rank is only #2 of 466 students. I am in 4 honors classes and that's all they offer for freshman, yet, I am #2. I didn't know that my school even ranked before I got the report card. How can this rank be? How do schools generally rank? I thought it was highest GPA with highest number of IB/ honors classes? Am I correct? Or does it depend on the school? I think some people doubled up on honors math or something like there are a few kids taking both honors geometry and algebra 2 and I am only taking honors geometry (long story). So they would be taking one more honors class than me. Maybe they also got a 4.0. I am really happy about my rank but ofcourse there is still one person in front of me-
How can I boost my rank? I was thinking about calling the office at my school and asking them... I just wanted to hear from CC.

Please, please say you're trolling. Because this? Is unhealthy.

^^^ Actually this was a legitimate question. You don't have to answer if you don't want to. I was merely asking how I can improve and I wanted someone to explain the ranking system to me.

I agree. #2 isn't bad at all. Even if you should have #1, there are still 3 1/2 more years to become #1.

And yes, each school does rank differently. The other person probably doubled up on math, as you said, although I don't understand why "honors" means so much at your school.

So it doesn't even matter yet until I'm like a junior or something? Can someone tell me what I could do to eventually be #1?

why don't you focus on trying to be your best instead of trying to be someone else's best?

If you think #2 in the grade is bad I don't want to know what you think of someone who probably doesn't make top 20 in a grade of 50

at my school many people, including myself, take classes outside of school to boost their rank.

To become #1, take harder classes and the highest grades possible, or close to them. It's fairly straightforward.

^^^ Yes I've heard of that but I just don't want to fork over the money for those classes....

Most high schools don't start seriously ranking until Junior year. At my daughters first high school (she moved junior year) the weighted ranks were not calculated till Junior year so everyone with a 4.0 unweighted was in the same rank. I believe this is fairly common but you can ask your school to be sure.

lol @ only 2. lol @ freshman year rank.

Why are you so obssessed with rank? Number 2 is far from horrible, but if it's that big of a deal, just work harder and take more APs. Just do your best at whatever classes you take. You're only a freshman, you still have 3 and half years to go. It's harmful to obssess this early in the game.

You're in the top .4% of your class, #2 is fine. Perhaps they took another honors class... who cares? You're only a freshman, your rank is going to change between now and the end of the year and each year. I'm a junior and I have no clue what my rank is.

Sheesh.

If you fall out of the top 46, you may have some reason to be concerned. Other than that, you're fine.

Freshman year, they didn't rank anybody as #1. All the kids with 4.0s were #2, because there were like 20 of us; once it got down below ten (first semester of sophomore year) they started giving out a #1 rank.

So chill.

you've got a long time until senior year buddy. That being said, it's a long time for you to work yourself up to #1 or get overwhelmed by such a petty thing as 1-2 ranking and plummet. like someone said above, the only thing you can control is you.

Being a top student, you should naturally enter into the hardest courseload your school has to offer. All you can do is keep up your part. Since if there's a #1 ahead of you now and assuming he wants #1 as well, all you can do is make sure you're always behind him gnawing at his tail (he has the luxury of "what you do, i can match, and stay ahead"). But you can't control if he messes up or not.

Plus, HS isn't all about ranking. I didn't let ranking affect my course choices for senior year and I am so glad because senior year is a blast when i'm not bummed down at home with a pile of homework. Enjoy HS!

Yes, rankings depend on the school.

Also, you're only halfway through your freshman year, and things can change a lot in the next three and a half years. I can understand if you were ranked 50th and wanted to move up, but focusing on being ranked first at this point isn't a good idea. You're already in the top 1% of your class, so just keep doing whatever you're doing. But if you schedule your classes for the next three years based on rank, you might end up making some not-so-smart choices.

I'm not going to schedule my class based on my rank, maybe a little. I think I'm going to just call the office and ask them how the ranking system works.

er...who cares? why don't u go do something else. if all you care about is grades you're not going to get into college anywhere.

^Well, you will get in somewhere, possibly somewhere good, but you may not enjoy high school (and of course colleges look for ECs too). I think the OP realizes that grades are not everything, but she still has no reason to be concerned.
